Which digital camera would you recommend?

I am going to ask for a new digital camera for my birthday. Before dd I was quite into photography and used old slr's.

Recently I have used a little Coolpix which was fine but now seems to produce consistantly low quality pictures and battery is flat every few hours. I like doing close ups, also take loads of photos of dd and her friends, generally a few seconds after the interesting moment has passed.

Would love an expensive digital slr but realistically don't have much more than £100 ish to spend and need something small enough for coat pocket.

Any ideas?

I have just bought a Sony Cybershot W130 from Amazon for less than £100. You need to buy a case though (and do as the screen on my W170 got cracked after 6 mths and was going to cost £120 to fix )
My previous Cybershots (this will be my third - lost one heartbroken and second got broken) have been great. It has very good write ups and is very easy and intuitive to use (imo).
The battery lasts for ages... over 300 shots I think, but it does not say how many minutes you have left just an indicator (but you can buy a battery that tells you that detail.)
The only other downside is that you need a memory card but a 2 gb one would be plenty and they are not so expensive any more.
Lots of fancy options that you as a keen photographer would understand and I can use because the pictures are easy to work out (ie macro and portrait).
HTH

I ordered this one

I've got the canon Ixus 850, and I love it. Battery lasts forever and it's just a brilliant camera.

I got a kodak easyshare M1033 for christmas and I love it. It takes fab pictures, even of rapidly moving babies and the smart capture feature means you can just point and click, and it chooses the right settings for you. Friends have commented on what good pictures it takes.£97.87 from kodak online, with free 2gb memory card, bag and delivery.

Thanks for those ideas. Will look at them all.

Canon Ixus. I've had the v3 version (3MP) and now the 900Ti (10MP). They have both been fab. I gave the V3 to DS2 when I got my new one and then bought one for DS1 this year from Ebay.

Easy to use small & sleek and take great pictures IMO.

Another vote for Sony .. I have had 2 now and they are great. Then again we seem to have Sony products everywhere in our house!

The constant shooting option is fab for taking pictures of children - even if it gives you a lot of cr*p ones to delete you end up with a good one in there too

Racingsnake · 05/02/2009 21:38

That's what I need!
