I am looking to buy a sling for my 5 week old and wondered if you had any recommendations?
Thanks you.

the moby wrap is fabulous. Looks daunting because of the length of fabric, but v easy to use.

well we have used our huggababy for four years and two babies (on our second sling)very easy and comfy for new and older babies.
(not sure if it is huggababy or hugababy?)

I used a ring sling for ages with DS - it was an Ellaroo lightly padded. Wish I'd tried a stretchy wrap though, like the Moby

nobodysfool · 03/02/2009 22:15

Is the moby easy to put on by yourself?

mei tai is fab

pigletpants · 03/02/2009 22:19

Yes because you can put it on first then pop baby in it and also take baby out and put back in without retying it. I used to put in on before going out, then pop baby in after. It is stretchy, so has a lot of give.

Moby is easy once you've tied it once, and so comfy. I think it's the best for a young baby (or a hugabub)

pigletpants · 03/02/2009 22:20

mei tai good, but personally I prefer stretchy wraps for tinies then mei tai at 6 months.

IAteMakkaPakka · 03/02/2009 22:20

Moby or Kari Me - both lovely soft versatile wrap slings. Highly recommended, DS is 18 months and we've found it really useful until recently.

Wouldn't recommend Tomy/Baby bjorn things, they don't offer babies nearly enough support (IMO) and are bound to be harder on your back over long periods.

hellymelly · 03/02/2009 22:21

I did have a hugabub too when my baby was small, and I liked it a lot,but I found the huggababy (a ring sling )a bit easier for a larger baby/toddler.

nobodysfool · 03/02/2009 22:21

ok thank you off to research these...

The Tomy is not supportive and breaks your back IME.

I use/d a Wilkinet and totally love it. dd is 25 months and I'd still use it(used it when she was 22 months), though she is a little tall for it now.

mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 03/02/2009 22:27

woven wraps if you want the very very best
however mei tai's are fabby too.
Avoid anything which calls itself a 'bag sling' because they are not good for babys posture or breathing. Also avoid the 'crotch hanging' baby carriers like baby bjorn, mothercare, tomy, quinny etc etc etc

nobodysfool · 03/02/2009 22:30

Looks like i would need an hour at least to put any of those on!
They do look comfy for Mum and baby.

Please don't be put off by the wraps - they look immensely complicated but it only takes a couple of attempts to get it on, IME (and I can barely tie my shoelaces!) and they come with really clear instructions.

I got mine second hand from eBay and they resell at good prices so don't be scared to have a shot, you can always sell them on if you really don't get on with it.

Even my DP, who was fairly sceptical and quite clumsy, managed to get himself rigged up to take DS out in it every day for months!

TaurielTest · 03/02/2009 22:42

I love love love my moby - their site www.mobywrap.com has details of all the different ways you can tie it, do have a look there while you're researching! you tie it the first couple of times in front of the mirror, then it's easy.

I loved my Baby Bjorn city (the one with back support) It was fantastically comfy for both of us, my son loved it - he loved being able to see everything and got lots of attention plus he could turn around and see me - not sure what the other poster meant as he had plenty of support and was very happy to go in it.
I carried on using it until he was 16 months old and then only stopped because it was starting to look freakish having a toddler strapped to my chest. The key to it being comfy for longer is to have the straps quite loose so that the child / baby is resting on your tummy rather than him being higher up.
Very easy to put on as no straps / great big bits of material to faff around with.
Only thing with the Baby Bjorn is that I didn't start using it with my son until he was about 8-10 weeks but as long as your baby can support their head I think you'd be fine with them facing in at first and then facing out later.
