Which is the best/easiest/most comfortable sling for a newborn?

I know this has probably been done to death on here and I have tried to search the archives but lake of slep is forcing me to be a bit slow. So thought i'd start my own thread.

What am I looking for. Well originally I thought i'd go for a babyhawk, I have one for dd3 (now 2 1/2) and I love it. But feel it could be a bit faffy with a newborn.

So i'd like something that is really easy to use, Just slip the baby in type thing and comfortable for both me and the baby.

I have been looking at the babaslings which looks like they might fit the bill.

But I thought i'd ask for your wise recommendations.

Anticipating that you may come back with a wrap type thing. I did have a freedom sling when dd was born but wasn't over enamoured with it. So looking for something different this time.

Thanx for your advice

Pink

I have not used a babasling, but I did get a hotsling Hotslings link here which looks similar so I will tell you my experience with that and you can decide if it is relevant or not.

DD liked it at the newborn stage and slept happily in it, also it was easily pop on and offable - unlike the wrap which was a faff. So for short uses it was fine, however for anything longer than short uses I found it agony - I'd say half an hour to an hour would do it before my shoulder started to ache. To be honest, just looking at that babasling makes my shoulder ache with the memory.

i am going to ignore your sentence about wraps and recommend a wrap!!!! lol

not just any wrap though, specifically a stretchy one, and even more specifically a moby, because that's what I Have and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

you can put it on in the morning, and because it's stretchy you can just pop baby in and out. it's the nicest stretchy wrap I ahve tried.

fwiw, a friend of mine wasn't keen on trying one as she'd tried a kari-me and not got on with it. but she did give it a go eventually and loves it and bought herself one.

I wouldn't recommend a babyhawk for a newborn as I just don't think it's snug enough (although from about 3 months is better)

If you want something really quick and easy then a pouch sling is good (hotsling or coorie type). I have a coorie fleece pouch which I love and use for situations when I want to pop him in really quickly. He's 7 months now and I still use it (although not for too long)

My fav snuggly newborn sling is my moby wrap except obviously you don't want one of these

agree with rubies about pouches and things too.
I hd a pouch when ds2 was born and could only wear it max half an hour before my shoulder was killing me.

could hap-pily wear him in the moby for 3+hours whilst out shopping

I'm sorry but I have to recommenda wrap sling, too. Stretchy ones are quite nice for newborns, but I love my didymos woven wrap the best.
Pouch slings ok but not the comfiest.

see! trust us, we know what we're talking about.

I can recommend teh lovely SaSaSlings as a place to try/buy :D Sandra there is fabulous, and you can hire slings first if you aren't sure

I am afraid I would go with either a ring sling or really the best is a wrap sling. either woven or stretchy . If you want one to last go for woven, there is nothing like it. BUT a stretchy is very forgiving for a beginer. There really is no contest between one of those and a baby bjorn/tomy/mothercare etc.

mrsgboring · 02/02/2009 11:30

Stretchy wrap is no faff - tie it on in the morning, pop baby in and out at will.

I'm not really a ring sling devotee but my friend is - she still hated her babasling, so it may not be the best route to go.

A lovely stretchy wrap will easily take you to the age when you could switch to your babyhawk. (You could use the BH with a newborn, but you're right it would be more faffy and it wouldn't be the most comfy for a newborn)

I had a ringsling (Ellaroo lightly padded) and loved it - really easy to use and it lasted until DS was one - and he's no lightweight

i just bought a babasling(from tkmaxx for £19.99) and i like it, my lo is 9 weeks old and i feel he is too big to be in the lying down position in it,but i have him facing me and he loves it SO easy to slip in and out,
i bought it so i dont have to lift the car seat in and out when taking lo's into nursery and its so much easier,
another friend of mine has a ring sling (huggababy i think) and he lo always looks really snug an comfy, and she finds it really comfy.

Moby D wrap sling or a well loved second hand 'German Style Woven' (GSW) wrap would always be my choice.

Indith · 03/02/2009 19:30

Wraps are utterly wonderful, woven is best IMO. I do have a pouch though that I got for dd and she probably spends more time in that at the moment than my wrap. Depends on the baby though I think, she likes being in cradle and isn't so keen on having her face to my chest in a front carry in the wrap. Ds loved beingupright in a wrap and hated being in a cradle carry.
