Do decent lunch boxes and non-leaking drink bottles exist?

LostGirl · 30/01/2009 07:35

Hi, I usually end up having to buy dd a new lunch box every term (she has one of those insulated lunch bags) as the inside lining rips etc. Are there any decent quality lunch boxes made or something more durable, I am happy to spend more if it means not having to shell out three times a year.

Also, any recommendations for a child size drinking flask that won't leak?

TIA

My mu used to get me that when cash was tight and then let me pick stickers and decorte it with me, not exactly flashy I know but lasted forever infact I am 22 and still have one of th tubs

LostGirl · 30/01/2009 07:43

Thanks, I remember my mum having tupperware parties!!! I imagine you can buy it on line now though, will go and google.

With drinks bottles - I now buy a pack of small bottled water (look out for supermarket offers) and dish out one of those and wash it in the dishwasher. When it's tired or lost just go to the cupboard produce another one.

Lakeland did a good one then discontinued it so have done this for over a year and it works well, it doesn't matter if it gets lost etc.

LostGirl · 30/01/2009 07:50

wow, you actually CAN'T buy it on line.

Sigg bottles do not leak and you can get them in small sizes.

LostGirl · 30/01/2009 13:04

Thanks Yeni, those bottles look perfect. Any other suggestions for lunch boxes as Tupperware does not seem to be an option without hosting a party

Wow tupperware parties still exist

I walked the entire way to school the other day unknowingly carrying a leaking juice bottle. Eventually a mum said to me "Errm, excuse me, but you are leaking." After a cursory glance to check the old pelvic floor hadn't given up, I realised it was ds' packed lunch. I then followed a trail of drips all the way home. i will be checking out Sigg bottles, methinks

Katisha · 30/01/2009 19:29

I have had exactly the same problem, with linings going and general mankiness of insulated lunchboxes.

So have given up on them and bought two biggish food storage boxes, the sort with flaps that close on each side - about £3 each in Wilkinsons/anywhere really. Inside each one (for each DS) I put the sandwiches (in a smaller food storage box), andthen fit in whatever else goes in. At the end of the day it's all plastic and easily washed and so doesn't matter if the yoghurt explodes or whatever.

Drinks bottles don't fit in though so I put the boxes plus a drink bottle in small (dalek) rucksacks. My best system so far.

DDs have utterly FANTASTIC drink bottles from Costco - I'll see if I can find a link to the brand.

They're slightly more grown-up non-spill, come in a pack of four for £10, so they have two for school and two for home, and I really can't praise them highly enough.

I shall hunt for a link.

snigger · 30/01/2009 19:37

this is the brand

This is a US link, but they sell them in UK Costco, and they really have been invaluable for us - tough, easy to clean, and simple to use.

LostGirl · 31/01/2009 06:52

Wow, they look really different, and at a tenner for 4 they are considerably cheaper than a Sigg so wil try these first methinks.

Thanks to all for suggestions, and as it appears that the perfect lunchbox does not exist it looks like I will be searching for a plstic tub and small bag to fit it all in now.

Tupperware is excellent, does not leak and no strange corners which mean you have to handwash everything.

LostGirl · 31/01/2009 07:07

Unfortunatley, I don't know anyone round here who sells it, and am not particularly willing to host a party myself simply in orer to buy a lunch box (plus the x amount of other storage containers I would convince myself I suddenly needed ). You don't appear to beable to buy it on line or in shops.

For an odd reason I now want to look at bento porn.

I like tiffin cases for packed lunches, and just a normal screw top bottle of water.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 31/01/2009 07:43

Oh and good lord then found fabric bento porn.

sweet

Apologies for going off on a tangent.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 31/01/2009 07:51

no

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 31/01/2009 07:54

oh hell no

pushchair · 31/01/2009 08:12

Is there really no other way to buy Tupperware?
My DD has an insulated bag from Lakeland and it has lasted well [we are on the 2nd school year with it]
Agree bottles are genarally shite. Even the one we are using now has 7 seperate parts which all need hand washing and putting back together.

LostGirl · 31/01/2009 12:59

Ok, DWP, had no idea what you were referring to until I looked at the links! I now feel I should be making considerable more effort when putting together the contents of dd's lunch box

Some of them are alarming, especiallt the computer one.

ChasingSquirrels · 31/01/2009 14:14

ds1 has an old style plastic lunch box that hinges on the bottom and has a little handle on the top. Was £1 from a discount warehouse and we have had it for 3 years now. Part of the plastic is cracked where he dropped it, but still works fine.

used fruit shoot bottles for drinks, don't have any leaks, bottles slightly misformed due to dishwashing, but still work fine.

ChasingSquirrels · 31/01/2009 14:16

similar to this

whoingodsnameami · 31/01/2009 14:23

My dc use THESE they do have the lining, but are very durable, I put mine through the washing machine 3 times a week and they are still fine, the matching flasks dont leak either.

Mercy · 31/01/2009 14:24

My dc have lunch boxes made by a company called Sistema (they do other food storage boxes too)

I got in Sainsbury's and Asda. Dd has had her's for over 3 years now.
