If you have a wooden table with a waxed finish, can you tell me if this is normal.....

Our new oak table arrived today. It's lovely but after tea DH gave it a wipe with a wet cloth and it now has a mark on it where the wax has come off a bit. Also DD put a cup of (cold) drink down on it and it has left a small ring. We have had it literally hours.

I knew we would have to rewax it once a year or so but I would have expected it to withstand a fair amount of wiping/ having items put on it without marking. In the words of another thread- AIBU???

Did it come with care instructions?

We have a pine coffee table with a wax finish and it is totally marked. Wax does not protect at all.

I would get a glass top made if I were you.

I think you need to wax it several times before it gets a good hardened coating on it.
I am surprised that a wipe has removed the wax. You should perhaps check the care instructions and make enquiries to the shop.
If not a very good beeswax layer or 3 should do the trick to seal the wood

we have a pine farmhouse kinda table v.old and marked just how i like it, but im thinking an oak table proabably v.expensive and wouldn't want to obviously mark on first use? we have to rub ours and down and rewax once or twice a year. it is more faded the end the boys sit where it is constantly wiped i must admit!

I linsead my oak table (as directed and it has no marks. (Except where DD was experimental with a biro)

Linseed?

Doesn't sound like its been properly wax sealed. Needs a few coats over a few weeks to build up good protection then periodically to maintain. Worth a phone call to the shop.

thanks all, will call the shop tomorrow
