forward carrying sling for older babies/toddlers

any suggestions - dd getting too big for baby bjorn. I've got a babasling (which I can't really get along with as feels uncomfortable and not that secure) and a scootababy sling ( I like this but dh doesn't plus its not that easy to take out if you have any bags to carry).

any other suggertions - I was thinking of kari me. I'd prefer something that you can fasten up and that doesn't look too lentil weaverish (ifyswim!) as dh wants to use it...

dd now 7 months and about 20 pounds...all tips/suggestions very welcome before i make another babasling type mistake.

tbh its not recommeded that you wear your LO facing outwards. It is not the best position ergonomically for them.
If you do however want to carry them like that, go for a mei tai and tuck their legs inside so that they dont dangle. That way their spines are supported and they wont be hanging by the crotch.

I have an (www.ergobabycarrier.com ergo]] and LOVE IT. it's based on a mei tai but buckles up. i carry ds (6mths but over 9kg) every day and doesn't do mt back at all. Have also carried dd (2.9) on my front in it - she is quite skinny though.

(is v un-lentil weavery too. am about to try and make a mei tai though - to try and be more lentil -weavery

Umlellala · 26/01/2009 17:08

sorry ergo
got kids climbing on me... want my attention, how dare they

Umlellala · 26/01/2009 17:10

also, more info here

think the kari me is too lentil-weavery for you.

poppy34 · 26/01/2009 17:54

mresleroy...she prefers to be inwards and sits happily that way so thats what I want (my instinct was never to be happy with idea of her facing out or have her on my back _.. am bad as still use babybjorn like that although not sure you're meant to (tbh if I'm out I take the scootababy).

umlelella -thanks fab sites and for posting whilst being a climbing frame.

I like MeiTais - they are easier than a clip type sling if you both carry as you don't have to adjust anything.

I have a ToddlerHawk, which is a big Babyhawk and a TaiTasi. My DH likes the Toddlerhawk and loves carrying DS in it as it's so comfy.

Umlellala · 26/01/2009 21:20

Can't believe how expensive Mei Tais are though! Was thinking of getting one as it might go over my coat better (and I am a big hippy) then selling the Ergo to raise funds but doesn't look like it would raise much

(reckon it takes about a minute to adjust the Ergo buckle between me and dh or carrying ds or dd... it is very, very easy, though I want a Mei Tai cos I like the idea of it just being material and tying and that)

Umlellala · 26/01/2009 21:24

Oh, the Scootababy looks v similar to the Ergo... BUT if you went for a Mei Tai you could easily roll it up and put it in your handbag I think. I do take the Ergo out but it takes up a bag or put it in the bottom of the pram...

cmotdibbler · 26/01/2009 21:27

You can buy a BH for about 35 quid second hand on the Yahoo UKBabywearingSwap group, and would prob get more that that for the Ergo. Get XL straps for maximum adjustability though

My MT's easily roll up into a bag, or can be strapped tight to your back so they don't get in the way

MoominMymbleandMy · 27/01/2009 02:18

OP, a Kari Me is a stretchy wrap and I think your baby is too heavy for that now.

Facing outwards is not thought to be good for the baby's back, or yours.

Go for a mei tai, Babyhawks are excellent starter MTs and easily picked up second-hand.

You can also look at soft structured carriers - fasten with buckles instead of knots.

Isn't the Baby Bjorn killing your back now?!

foxytocin · 27/01/2009 05:20

as going to tell you about ukbabywearingswap but i see cmotoddler beat me to it.

even better, if you sell a babycarrier 3rd hand, you can get just about all your money back.

poppy34 · 27/01/2009 17:11

ohh..this is all really helpful thanks -and yes the baby bjorn cripples me now hence need for new one.

will check out the babyswap group...
