Boden's USA customers pay less than us!! Figure that one out.
SecondhandRose · 05/04/2005 15:38
If you go to www.bodenusa.com and compare the prices at the exchange rate currently at 1.80 you will see that our American 'cousins' are getting more for their money than we are.
Kayleigh · 05/04/2005 15:40
yes, but isn't this the same on all sites that cater for US and UK market? For example amazon.co.uk?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21 is more expensive than amazon.com?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21.
SueW · 05/04/2005 15:42
Just a bit!!! $88 vs £59 for the 'front cover' women's bow dress.
SueW · 05/04/2005 15:43
And $10 flat fee shipping - and free returns if you spend more than $100!

Gymboree went bust over here as it was cheaper by miles for UK customers to order from US website. boden however isn't doing to well in the US according to a marketing report I read in the Times recently. The US is so cheap for clothes that in comparison Boden is quite expensive
Enid · 05/04/2005 16:58
god who in their right mind would order from Boden when they'v got J. Crew????
SecondhandRose · 06/04/2005 15:27
The only reason that I found out about Boden was that whilst I was in the US I started speaking to a woman from Boston, her daughter was wearing a Boden swimsuit and she said her and all her friends were raving about it. Her English sister in law orders her stuff, gets it sent to the US and then they post it back.
I don't know why Boden don't have reasonable prices in the first place instead of sending out discounts all the time.
decmum · 06/04/2005 15:36
Right Enid you're in big trouble. I was just bemoaning (another thread) the cost of Boden but the compulsion to buy on the basis that I get emailed every week practically and sent a catalogue every 2 months.....when you go and introduce me to a whole new online ordering option which is fantastic...thank goodness they don't do childrens clothing as well.
hub2dee · 06/04/2005 15:43
$88 / (£1 = $1.80) = £48.89 equivalent.
Plus VAT @ 17.5% = £57.44
So, difference is only a couple of quid (using your admitedly quite generous exchange rate), so it's not bad. In the US, mail order companies often swallow the sales tax for in-State sales, otherwise you may have an additional sales tax on the US price...
This kind of thing does get my goat though.
Mountain Buggy pushchairs are virtually half price out there.
Earlybird · 06/04/2005 15:50
Agree with Hub2Dee, the exchange rate hasn't been $1.80 for a while now. The last money I exchanged was at a rate of $1.94.
cupcakes · 08/04/2005 09:31
So, would it be cheaper to order off Boden USA and get it sent to your UK address (though somehow I can't see them being very happy to do that...)?
hub2dee · 08/04/2005 10:05
Not according to my calcs below.
If you factor in cost of international shipping and insurance, with the risk that the postie knocks on your door to collect VAT owing (plus broker fee if applicable) I doubt you'd be in a much better position.
cupcakes · 08/04/2005 10:25
Ah, I hadn't realised that the items would be posted out from the US - for some reason I had thought they would still be dispatched from the UK
hub2dee · 08/04/2005 11:30
In that case, go for it.
However, I imagine that on placing the order / after the order is created (presuming a UK destination address), some kind of 'VAT needs to be applied to your order' message would kick in...
hub2dee · 08/04/2005 11:31
I haven't registered on their site. If you have, create an order and take it all the way to just prior to 'final confirmation' and see how it goes...
flashingnose · 08/04/2005 11:35
Enid, where do you get J Crew from? US site says they don't ship to the UK?
