Lego - which one should I buy?

Have been thinking about buying dds some Lego. There are so many different sets you can get - just wondered if anyone knew which one would be best.

depends on the age. I got DS some megabloks which he really like from about 1 year old.

I really like the look of those magnetix (think they are called that) but would worry about the marbles.

They are for dds 5 and 3. We have stickle bricks and megablocks. Wanted to get them something smaller and more challenging.

im not following you, honest. We bought dd aged 4 a big tub for christmas with 100s of bits , big and small. I hate it but dh loves it, they spend hours making stuff from the booklet.

TBH - I think I want it for myself too. I never had any as a kid. Always used to play with my friends for hours.

My two play for hours with Duplo - dd is 3 and ds 7. Obiously he finds it really easy to put together but they create buildings together in which they then play with various character figures - Incredibles, Bob the Builder and the standard Lego family figures and animals which come in some sets.

There is a girl orientated range called Belville (pink bricks, fairies and princesses) which is the traditional smaller size bricks but recommended from aged 5 so its suitability depends on how much your 3 yo is likely to mouth it. ds has a variety of the sets - Space, Spiderman, Sports et al but still reverts to the generic sets and likes to follow the instrcution booklet.

You can often find discounts on some of the larger generic buckets in places like Woolworths which make them a good starting point whichever size you choose.

The Entertainer toyshop chain have a Lego sale at the moment. Some of it half price.

We have loads of the duplo/ lego explore which has lasted really well - it is almost impossible to wear it out! Ds (who is almost 5) has just moved onto the small pieces of 'proper' lego and is happily playing with dh's collection from his childhood.
Dd (2) meanwhile is really into the duplo and ds is really happy to play with that when it is out. They especially love the farm animals and anything with wheels, especially the train set.

Have a look at the lego website to get an idea of the different ranges-there are lots of different "themes" as well as the general building sets. You can order from there too-although it is obviously best to check round for special offers running elsewhere first. My DSs have all loved it and we have a huge collection now-bought over the years (DS1 is 23!)Ebay can be great but can still be expensive as lego is so sought after-so check on the retail price first before you get carried away!

Personally at that age (given you've already got megabloks) I would get the 4+ stuff which I think is called Create. Definitely there is loads on Ebaby.
