Please tell me I actually need a new dryer

My old dryer (well hardly old, 2 1/2 snivelling years old!-stupid Hotpoint!) has completely packed up now, and I am drowning in a house full of bedlinen hanging from doors, towels all down the banister and on the back of chairs-I do need a new dryer don't I? The sheets have been in there for 3 x 160 minute cycles and they are still not dry! I can't really afford one for another three months, but don't know how I'll manage without one, as it feels like dead money taking it all to the laundrette. Should I get one on the cc and pay it back over three months? The house is way too small to have laundry everywhere-I have run out of doors and still have towels to dry somewhere!

If you have the space, Lakeland have a good electric airer which dries quite economically. There was a thread a few days ago about drying clothes in winter.

I really don't have the space, that's the problem-I already have my concetina airer up in the lounge every day as it is the only room it will fit in-can only do door hanging drying here really (we're in a maisonette, so a flat but squidged onto two floors).

That's what I want to know too! I had one that went for YEARS, then gave it to a young couple with a new baby as I inherited my mum's much newer one, and it died! Argh! Have looked at the reviews on it and it has happened to everyone that has bought that model though, boo! I have ordered one, but keep nearly chickening out as every time I listen to something it shouts "there is a recession on, you will have no money tomorrow, don't you dare borrow money!"

Can it be repaired or would that be almost as expensive as a new one?

turtle23 · 23/01/2009 08:30

Is it a condenser? If so, take the condensing coil out and clean it. Nobody told me you had to do this...never had a condenser...like new!!!

gemmummy · 23/01/2009 08:32

turtle, i've got a condensor too and never cleaned the coil!! Where would i find that then?

It should be able to be pulled out..mine is directly above the water tank thingy. Was full of fluff and when cleaned the drying time went back to as first use...

oooh i had a hotpoint set and forget drier- twas shite!! i set it and it forgot to dry the clothes

if you do end up getting a new one i can reccomend the white knight range- cheap and reliable!

shelleylou · 23/01/2009 10:25

If yu know why its broken you cloud order parts of the internet and fit them yourself depending on what happened of course.
I wouldnt reccomend Indesit machinces mine are a year and a half old and ive had problems with washer and dryer in the last month.

Pawslikepaddington · 23/01/2009 10:36

I didn't know about the coil, ooh! Will check that first! It just doesn't get warm, at all. It goes round but is stone cold inside and out. It is sad that repairing them is as expensive as new ones now though. I do two loads a day on average, so need it really.

i cheated i got a new door for £40 for washing machine and my dad put it on. Repair man would have cost me nearly triple that. My tumble dryer is costing me £8 to fix as its the latch that needs replacing.
