Mattress for a five year old

Does anyone know whether children are supposed to have firm / medium / soft mattresses? I know we should go and test some, but I am hoping that it will last him a little while and I don't want to buy the wrong thing!

From what I can gather, a pocket sprung mattress is best??! Having done a survey on the Tesco and Argos sites, Silentnight also keep popping up as a cheap-ish (£150 approx) option (and a brand that I have heard of!), but they have their own Microcoil system...agghhh, so complicated!!

TIA

Bumping for you.

I would've thought medium?

I would just go for the best you can possibly afford from one of the big names - and if it feels comfy to you then it'll be fine. The more pockets the better I think.

Then get a waterproof mattress cover to protect it

When we got DD's (pocket sprung, v v comfy) she was sick on it on night 3, before I'd had a chance to buy a cover So I had to remove the padded outer bit and wash it - took forever to dry!

Thanks PR and aw!

Medium is probably a good compromise! £150 is about my limit, which isn't much in mattress-world apparently .

Will take your advice re the mattress cover, that's the kind of thing that happens to me .

Thanks again .
