Stairgates

I need a stairgate for the top of my stairs which will fit onto a bannister on either side rather than the wall.. Does anyone have any recommendations for good stairgates that will fit & that don't have a "step over bar" at the bottom?? Any suggestions greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

Is it a flat/square banister or a round one? Would these be any good? The fittings look nice and slim and 'tis in the sale.

Oooo funny you should say that... That's the one I've been looking at as it has some good reviews. It's a round banister but the stairgate would fix onto the flat part at the top & bottom. Just wondered if anyone had used this stairgate?

You may need a "y" spindle.

Our top of the stairs is a flat wall one side and a round banniester on the other.
The gate fits flush to the wall and the other side the "y" spindle (imagine a Y on its side) fits into the end of the gate with the long bit and the open "v" bit of the y then goes either side of the bannister..makes sense..?

It fits v securly then.

btw, I may be wrong and not following how your bannister is BUT I don't think that gate is right for the top of a stairs with a round bannister..Those side clips will attach to the wall but not the banister.

Try this type here with this here.

I think I used this website and if you call them they will advise you iykwim..ime, the gates cost more than we wanted BUT its worth it for peace of mind..also I find the auto shut gates amazing..having only changed to them recently I can't fault them. No worrying if you didn't shut them iykiwm.

BTW,if you want I have x2 spare "y" spindles.
Can sell them on if interested. Never used but bought in excess. x

Y spindles are usually only available for pressure fit gates, all of which have the "step over bar" that the OP wanted to avoid. TBH I wouldn't really trust a pressure fit gate at the top of stairs anyway...

I ended up not being able to fit gates at the top or bottom of any of our stairs (2 flights) and put them on the room doors instead. It works really well for us.

I don't really want a pressure fit for the top of the stairs (just in case!) will have to do some more investigating! thanks for all your advice ladies

didn't read the bit about not wanting the step over bit..sorry..

Not sure what the issue is pressure fitted gates.? Ours at the tops of stairs are pressure fitted and are fine. They have caps that are fitted to the wall and slot into them and ino are v sturdy.
We also have made ds and dd aware of the issues of not messing around with the gate iykiwm and all had been fine...

you are best ringing one of the sales companies and asking advice.
