tin opener rage

jooseyfruit · 21/01/2009 17:34

any recommendations for a really good, sturdy tin opener THAT WORKS?

have just flung mine in the bin along with a mangled tin of tuna that was supposed to be dc's tea.

TIA

No, fraid not. I just stock up on cheapo 50p ones and replace them as and when. I don't think a good one actually exists. And I think its tuna that knackers them.

jooseyfruit · 21/01/2009 17:46

i'm swiftly coming to that conclusion mrs!

i have chucked 2 in the bin recently,

go for the cheapo ones,

replace often,

BexieID · 21/01/2009 17:54

The ones in Morrisons for £1.99 are not too bad. Having said that, they have broken on a Fray Bentos pie tin before, which we had to bin and tun downstairs to get more pies from the Co-Op!

Wallace · 21/01/2009 17:56

we had an ikea one (BATALJ, it still has the label on ) for years that did work. Replaced it when it stopped working quite so well. A few crap tin openers later I fished it out of the back of the drawer in frustration and it still works better than the new cheapo tesco one.

jooseyfruit · 21/01/2009 18:25

fab, thanks Wallace.

i'm always looking for an excuse to do the 80 mile round trip to Ikea.

it's usually because i've run out of napkins

Mine is the most wonderful can opener ever - honest guv. Just run to kitchen to check: it's a culinare MagiCan. Snaps shut on can and keeps hold of lid until you open it up. Lasted about 4 years so far and no sign of anything less than years of wear ahead of it!!!!!!!! [blimey, such fulsome praise about a plastic can opener]

CarGirl · 21/01/2009 18:42

my magican lasted about 7-8 years, we've just replaced it.

beansmum · 21/01/2009 18:43

I have a brabantia one, it does the job but is probably not the most woderful can opener ever. Nice handles though, I always find the metal ones dig in to my hands.

So Califrau what's it called and where can we get them imported from?

Furball · 21/01/2009 18:50

know how you feel about it - I've got through 3 in the last 6 months. But bought the magican and haven't looked back. (how sad a life I lead )

3girlies · 21/01/2009 18:58

Tesco do one in the value range, not the most basic one, it is a black plastic one, ours have lasted a few years, much longer than pricier ones we have had.

CamelToe · 21/01/2009 19:01

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Actually I could have taken mine with me from my marital home and been more like 12 years old when it had to go in the bin (it still worked but was getting difficult to use)

oooooooh
a magican it is then.

i would pay serious money for a decent one, so 5.99 isn't half bad.
thanks Cali!

Furball · 22/01/2009 08:01

I bought mine in waitrose

differentID · 22/01/2009 08:09

I have tried 2 Ikea ones, cheap ones from tesco, I had a decent one about 7 years which gave out on me a year ago and I've gone through 6 in a year. Now have a metal one from Asda which cost about £3.50. Seems to be very good so far. Only using for a month.
