WHICH DOUBLE BUGGIES FIT ON BUSES ? !!!

My toddler will be just aged 2 when new baby comes along this June, so I need a double buggy. I've spent hours on the net reading reviews, but very few review my most important criteria, which is how they fare on buses! As I don't drive, a double buggy's whose wheelbase is short enough to fit on a bus is vital andmost of them look as if they don't!

My Land Rover ATP (single)pushchair has a long wheelbase and takes up the space of two buggies in the 'parking' bay on modern buses, which gets a grizzly look from mums getting on the bus as they have to fold their prams up because of me!

I've only ever seen one double buggy on a bus, a Jane Powertwin and that looked about the same length as my Landy, and of course side-by-side styles will have no chance of getting on a bus!

Can anyone recommend or review their own double buggy as a regular bus user?

I like three-wheelers but hate front swivel wheels unless they lock and live semi-rural up a very nbig 1 in 4 hill, so need an all-terrain style really rather than a shopping trolley (4 swicel wheels).

Thanks!

Hello I don't have a double buggy myself as I only have 1 daughter (aged nearly one) but my sister has a son & daughter & had to get a double buggy... I don't know if this one would be any good if your toddler will be 2 when the new baby is born, but my sister swears by her Phil & Ted pushchair. It's a 3 wheeler which (I think) has a lockable front wheel & can convert into a single pushchair. It's the same width as most single pushchairs so would be ideal for getting on & off buses... Hope this helps x

side by sides will fit on a bus eg dbl maclaren

Powertwins are great - not really any longer than a regular ATB (about 120cms) and so nice to use.

Jane powertwin was great when my dts were tiny but gave me rsi using it now they're bigger. Can you not use single with a sling? I love the P&T though mine has since died. I use single buggy (for one dt) and sling (for baby 9mths) now. Much much easier. I use the bus several times a day for school run and sometimes they don't have disabled access so have to fold etc.

We've got this one
We're due in 3 weeks so haven't used it yet, but have measured it folded out against my single and is only the wheel size in difference iyswim

Bit of a cheeky one, but I am selling this one that is v similar to Littleboyblue's except a bit more lightweight, and the front seat reclines (though a bit cheaper looking - the blue might not be to everybody's taste ).

I haven't taken it on the bus but it is v small and light (for a double). I am coping with a sling and single, but my little girl is nearly 3 and has dropped her nap - we don't let her sleep in the buggy anymore (so a double pushchair isn't really needed).

i think as buses are different in different areas, that it will depend where you live.

Maclaren side by sides are used most often here, although i have seen the graco one (one in front of the other) and used a zooper tandem myself.

can you use a sling and buggy? or buggy and buggy board?

PinkFurryStripeyTiger · 21/01/2009 21:47

I don't drive so use buses quite a lot. My P&T fits fine, as it's footprint is that of a single, and the brakes are good. In fact, friends and I have fitted 3 P&T on one bus before now!
Maclarens breaks are a waste of time, esp. on buses.

PinkFurryStripeyTiger · 21/01/2009 21:48

gah- brakes

Umlellala · 21/01/2009 21:50

The P&T's are def lovely (and small) if you can afford them.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 21/01/2009 21:50

for a bus I would reccomend a sling and buggy you can fold one handed if required - I had a jane powertwin for my older two (20 month gap) - but never took it on bus used tubes and trains with it though.

I live in a more rural area now and do not have a regular low floor bus service so cannot be sure I will be able to get on a bus unless buggy is folded. so with my 3 month old an dd1 who will be 3 in april I will use a sling and dd1 can walk - but I have yet to brave it as with the kids I won't be able to carry much in the way of shopping etc. anyway.

Not much help there sorry but it does really depend on the kind of buses you have in your area - what kind of trips you will be making and whether you wil be totally screwed if one day you couldn't get on the bus (is it possible to walk/ get a taxi if required?).

Umlellala · 21/01/2009 21:51

Hang on, just read you need all-terrain. I think a Phil n Teds is what you need!

ToAMountainDAISYcal · 21/01/2009 22:37

definately a P&T; i've had mine on the bus loads of times. The front wheel locks too.

I've been testing double buggies and had a Powertwin. I was using it with a newborn and a 19mo old toddler and got a really sore wrist as it wanted to pull to the right all the time so pavements that sloped down to the road were a nightmare to negotiate. It almost tipped over going up kerbs as well.

AccidentalMum · 21/01/2009 23:08

Only a P and T really appropriate for buses if you can't go the sling and a single route. Everything else sturdy will take the space of two although a Mountain Buggy will fit in neatly. TBH you can do 5/6 months with a sling, but then DC1 is still only 2.7 and you'll have to be pretty enthusiastic to sling beyond that....it is what I do as a daily bus user, but it take commitment

laumiere · 22/01/2009 23:19

The We2 Combi is a side-by side which is the same width as a standard wheelchair, so will definitely fit on buses. You can get them for about £199-250.

DS1 needs a Mclaren Major Elite (buggy/wheelchair) and we've got a clip on sidecar (the Revelo Smorph) which can clip onto any pushchair and we'll use for DS2 (expected March).
