Anyone else had problems with alarm going off on Tommee Tippee Monitor 6 with Sensor Mat

My 12 wk old son has one of these tommee tippee analogue sensor mat monitors - cos he decided he preferred sleeping on his tummy.
Since buying it he prefers now sleeping on his back again - BUT the monitor alarm went off a fortnight ago... and it was hot in his room. So we were pleased and relieved that we had bought the monitor - which senses movement and if no movement or breathing for 20 seconds, the alarm sounds.

Since that - it went off last night once
And 2 nights ago it went off 3 times.

I don't know if it is a fault with the monitor or if he is stopping breathing/holding his breath.

Anyone else had a problem with this product?

Also - the alarm on it is not volume controllable.... so if I have the monitor on silent so I can't hear him squeaking in the night, I also cannot hear the alarm if it goes. You have to have it on quite loud to hear the alarm - and then I am kept awake by every snuffle.

Would love to hear if anyone else has a solution to this.
Don't want to stop using it in case he IS stopping breathing ..... Help!

Hi
I have the Angel one - but they are all more or less the same. Can't help with the volume as mine has it. But depending on the size of your monitor, it may be that he is rolling off the sensor pad ? Mine both did this once they got a bit older and moved around more. If he was in the corner of his cot or right to one side this may have been the case. Otherwise it could be that the sensor is not lying completely flat on the base of the cot - or that a blanket / sheet was covering it. The first monitor I had - the sensor was too small by the time they got to 12mnth ish and they did keep rolling off it. So we had to buy the bigger one which has two large sensor pads. Check where he is in the cot next time it goes off - and make sure it is central under his base.

thanks.... will check position and for blankets.
It is so frustrating!
He doesn't seem to be moving off it... as he is in same place as where I left him.... and also he is only 12.5 wks old!
Thanks though... will try this.

I had a Johnson and Johnson one for years which was great, now I have the Tommee Tippee which is not as good.

I was told when I had this problem with the J&J that a newborn baby breathes very heavily. As they get older they breathe much less heavily but as they weigh more their breaths have more impact, as far as the sensor pad is concerned. But there is a transition period when they are both not breathing so heavily and not very physically heavy that makes the alarm prone to go off.

I have had the same problem at that age with all my DCs. However, I have found it continued with the Tommee Tippee alarm as it's not so good. I don't use the alarm any more, just watch the light.

Sorry - though you said 12mnths !!!
Does it have a sensitivity button ? You can turn our level of sensitivity up to full whack.

Will check for sensitivity button.... not sure.
Thanks.
Interesting re the breathing impact etc Balloonslayer.... at least I know not to panic each time it goes off! Last 2 nights it hasn't gone off - so that's good.... but last night I DREAMT that it went off and woke myself up with a start!! How silly!

Not had this problem, but my Angelcare one says to make sure the receiver unit is at least 18inches or so away from the sensor mat....

?

I have had the same problem with my tommee tippee movement sensor. It has gone off around 10 times and my son is 17weeks old.
The doctor looked sceptical when I said that the alarm said he had stopped breathing and said I had to 'observe' him rather than trust the alarm. She said that we should look for blue lips and lack of chest movement, which sounds horrifying but she is probably right.
It went off again last night and I am now going to contact tommee tippee.
My son has reflux which can lead to sleep apnoea, so that may also be the cause of the alarm going off. It is very worrying.....I can sympathise with you

Hi All,

Just wondering if those with a TT monitor are still experiencing the same problems? I have a 13 week old and since moving him from his moses basket to the cot, the alarm has gone off on 5 nights out of 7! I read that if you have a slatted cot base that you can get false readings and therefore its recommended to put wood underneath. We therefore put a piece of MDF under the mattress and the first night the alarm didn't go off yet last night (2nd night) it went off twice. I took my son to the doctors and I think that they thought I was overreacting but I used the same monitor with my first son and didn't have this problem. My son does wiggle around alot at the bottom of the cot, i.e seems to do 90 degrees but I don't think he's moved off the pad every time!
The doctor said to keep an eye on him but didn't seem too worried. I sleep in the same room as my son and now sleep with one eye on the flashing light virtually all night!

From a very worried mummy!
