see this thread and you will understand why I want them. Anyone know where I can easily buy Canadian produce?
(not macaroni and cheese I have been sternly told )

No, it has to be Kraft dinner. here.

NotQuiteCockney · 19/01/2009 18:29

Oh, yes, hotdogs. The Herta ones are ok, I think, quite like normal hot dogs. Think you can get them at Waitrose or whatever.

CrushaGrape · 19/01/2009 18:55

There is the Canadian shop on Maiden Lane in Covent Garden. Thy also have mail order online here:

brimfull · 19/01/2009 19:22

that first thread is heart breaking

does she have a photo of her family in Canada?

CrackopentheBaileys · 19/01/2009 19:32

I guess that she probably has some, she is close to both of her Grandma's.
I am thinking of doing a Canada themed week, I just need to discuss it with her Dad. My other mindee is portugese, and my son is part filipino so I'm planning on doing a week for each person/country, so that it doesn't seem that it's all about her iyswim.
So I made her hotdogs the other day and she was soooo looking forward to them, and then BUMMMER she didn't like them! I will try the Herta ones. I should be able to get my Nan to get this stuff for me, she can shop in the American Base as Grandad was in the American Navy. Any more Brand idea's would help a great deal, specifically for dinners. Or even just dinner idea's, I didn't realise my cooking was 'so English' lol I had to laugh at that one

Sorry NotQuiteCockney, that link is no good as it's mac AND cheese, and she doesn't like the cheesy one.... btw I have no idea what she's on about, I'll have to ask Daddy I think!

sorry, forgot to say, I didn't realise that Canadian food was a lot of the same brand as American (derrrr I know!). So I was asking WHERE to get it, but now I know it's American I can get Nan to get it. It's just WHAT to get now!

Crushagrape, thanks for the link, I'll probably get some flags and stuff from there for the themed week

You'll have to ask her dad, Kraft dinner always has cheese with it, of a sort. Well, orange powder.

CrackopentheBaileys · 19/01/2009 20:33

lol at orange powder....

Yeah I thought that too, maybe it's just plain pasta!

You can get North American goods quite reasonabley at Longacres garden centre in Bagshot. There is also a shop in VWater that sells them, but is more expensive.

We (American family) get most of our stuff from Costco (the Chicago hotdogs are good). They don't sell Mac & Cheese, though - no big loss. Once every three years is enough to keep the memories of how crap it is going.

CrackopentheBaileys · 19/01/2009 20:58

n1 scienceteacher... oh you again!
Nice night of rain last night huh?
Thanks for the tips, I'll have a look at v.water as it's so close. Might be worth paying a wee bit more to not have to travel.... he he I know Bagshot isn't far but I'm lame at finding places!

It's on the A30 just before the turnoff for Bracknell - you can't miss it!

scienceteacher · 19/01/2009 21:08

The VWater one is called Natural Meats and it's on Station Parade - it's a butcher's, btw. There is one in Staines too, but I don't think they stock American stuff.

madwomanintheattic · 19/01/2009 21:14

i've got a box of kraft dinner in the larder - let me know if you want it (i'm guessing not as it's the orange powder one lol). and i'm off to alberta next month so can bring you back some goodies if you let me know.

and i live 10 minutes from bracknell...

madwomanintheattic · 19/01/2009 21:15

and don't forget the aunt jemima's and maple syrup....

scienceteacher · 19/01/2009 21:16

The only place to get maple syrup (apart from close to the source) is Costco. They have huge jugs of grade A for about tenner.

CrackopentheBaileys · 19/01/2009 21:18

madwoman that is so kind of you, thank you so much for the offer. I shall certainly give you a shout if there proves to be something that she simply can't live without
I already make the super moist cakes, I thought she might pee herself when she saw the yummy white one with sprinkles!

CrackopentheBaileys · 19/01/2009 21:20

Just found this thread, which is very timely. Been looking for a source of Kraft Dinner and your tips have been helpful. Had e-mailed Kraft UK who advised that they manufacture here but seem to sell only in Scotland. Will try suggestions of Bagshot and VWater. What's the name of the shop in Bagshot, just off the A30? My tip is that Morrisons supermarkets stocks Canadian Maple Syrup, both normal and organic (organic? It comes from trees, how could it not be organic?). Morrisons also stock Betty Crocker chocolate icing for cakes and Oreo cookies. Waitrose has Bisquick pancake mix, which we can't live without.

Yes, Herta hotdogs much like the Canadian ones, but you need the soft hotdog rolls to really make it work. Or cut the hotdogs up and put into baked beans for 'Franks & Beans'.
