Please give me some advice on how to find a pushchair that does not steal your identity!

I am sure you all know what I mean! I still have a while, but am coming to the realisation that I will have to buy a pushchair again.

I remember from last time that Mclaren ones were the easiest to fold down and steer.

I am looking for something

lightweight
understated
but suitable for a newborn

Is it possible to find something that meets these criteria? We had a Mclaren for my other dds but only after spending one hell of a lot of money on other crazy purchases, by which time they were not newborn age!

PS. I am not really aiming to spend £800!

TIA

Not possible.
You automatically metamorphose into chav drudge as soon as yuo get behind one. They are the work of the devil hisself.

electra · 18/01/2009 23:38

LOL moondog, I agree. If I could do without one I would!

The day I put my ds in his I was copunting down the days until he didn't need it.
Free! Free! At last I'm free!!

(Not helpful I know.)

Me too with my daughters who are now 7 and 5! Back to the beginning again, I suppose

sling?

electra · 18/01/2009 23:47

Yes, I will use a sling for as long as I can get away with it (although that can be a mine field too!). The other day I saw a woman with a sling and it had these long flappy bits of material which wound themselves around her ankles while she walked - nightmare!

A techno is suitable from birth, or is it something lighter than that which you want?

ChasingSquirrels · 18/01/2009 23:50

lol. After the standard travel system I had a bebe confort activ (small, telescopic fold, lightweight, rear-facing, no longer available) for ds1 (and ds2),
and also a babystyle cyclone (large tank-like 3-wheeler, rear-facing, also no longer available) for ds2.
Plus slings with ds2.

Maclaren · 18/01/2009 23:52

have you seen the new maclaren XT suitable from birth in black saw one today, they are lovely

electra · 19/01/2009 00:27

Yes, that is quite reasonable, I think. Plonker - I want the lightest thing possible, I guess...

I think you should go for the Maclaren XT they are fab. I've gone back to my old one now the middle child is out of the pram and I only have to transport ds2.

electra · 19/01/2009 10:09

Thanks for replies. I do like the fact this one is black. My experience of Mclarens is that they are so easy to use.

Get a stretchy wrap sling to begin with (you can pre tie so that baby can be put in and out without untieing) and then a MeiTai when 6 months or so. I carry DS who is a big 2.7 in a MeiTai now, and very, very rarely use a pushchair.

Only badly tied slings flap round your ankles - sounds very weird to me

suwoo · 19/01/2009 10:14

cmotdibbler, can you link me to a stretchy wrap sling for a newborn please? I have a meitai already, but are these better for 6 months plus?

MrsMattie · 19/01/2009 10:17

Moby Wraps - google them. they're fab for newborns / small babies. I still need a buggy for shopping, though! Got a 2nd hand M&P Pilko Pramette on Gumtree for £80 and adore it. Will sack it off for cheapie McClaren when DD is a bit bigger. Can't help with the identity thing, though. Even Kate Moss morphs into Vicky Pollard when she's pushing a buggy (she does! I saw her pushing her daughter in a buggy while smoking a fag in Holland Park once!).

suwoo · 19/01/2009 10:22

Cheers MrsMattie, that is exactly what I am looking for . That demo video makes it look a piece of piss!

electra · 19/01/2009 10:22

Well if Kate Moss can't look stylish with a push chair then what hope is there for the rest of us??

I am thinking of not buying one so that I have to just cope without it . I like wrap slings though - they look much nicer and probably more comfortable for a newborn.

Another vote for the XT here

cmotdibbler · 19/01/2009 10:26

I was going to say Moby too. Buy one second hand for a better price tho !

Wraps are a bit more cuddly than a MT, and easier to bf in (I think - I had a ring sling with DS, which was perfect, but I didn't have to run after other children in it), but a MT is perfect for older babies and toddlers as it is more supportive. A stretchy wraps failing is the stretchy part as it can't hold the weight of a bigger baby

MrsMattie · 19/01/2009 10:42

Moby's take a bit of practice, but once you've mastered them they're fab.

nappyaddict · 19/01/2009 10:44

Maclaren XLR. You can get some pretty decent ones secondhand aswell.

electra · 20/01/2009 12:33

Thanks for replies - perhaps I will use a sling for as long as I can get away with it then...! But after a Mclaren.

nappyaddict · 20/01/2009 13:32

I would get a mei tai or a woven wrap if you want to try a sling. They are the most supportive imo.

electra · 20/01/2009 13:37

Thanks nappyaddict
