Vacuum Cleaner recommendations please!

Ours has just stopped being a vacuum cleaner, now sort of shoves crap around the floor!

It is a dyson, but to be honest it was given to us and we have always been a bit suspect of whether it was in full working order when we got it.

So, we are put off dysons.

We live in a flat, first floor and have steep stairs to clean. This, along with lack of storage means we would prefer pull along, but would consider an upright if that was a resounding choice.

We have two cats, a 2.5yo, and the intention of another (child, not cat ). We have floorboards in the front room, carpets in hallway and bedroom, vinyl floors in kitchen and bathroom.

We have probably had about 3 vacuum in the last 5 years. I want one that will last, and clean deeply.

Please recommend. Thinking £150. Would prefer much cheaper, would consider a little more.

Sebo the best hoover by far.

WowOoo · 16/01/2009 17:05

Miele cat and dog. No idea how much they cost, but ours is excellent.

PavlovtheCat · 16/01/2009 17:10

Staryeyed - which Sebo though? I have seen this sebo but not sure if its a bit basic?

I have heard good things about both Sebo and Miele...

Another vote for Sebo - utterly fab. Our;s is an upright, light, powerful and vastly better than previous delights.

PavlovtheCat · 16/01/2009 17:16

cluckyagain - does it have a good flex/hose for stairs? Is is quite long?

have you checked the beater bar belt, mine is knackered, just had a look and the belt is snapped.
New belt cheaper than new vacumn.

ChasingSquirrels · 16/01/2009 17:17

ah, cylinder? so no belts anyway.
as you were....

staryeyed · 16/01/2009 17:19

Ours is the Volcano K3 its got all the attachments we need and 2100 watts. Got it for £160 from somewhere. Very quick delivery. I can look where I got it from if you want.

PavlovtheCat · 16/01/2009 17:19

oh that sounds rather technical...! How would I know? Where would I look?

Part of the reason is does not clean well, is that the hose has twisted in two seperate places, bent in half, and as it moves, it indents in the bend places and stops if from sucking up anything. Its a pain and the only way I can stop that being a problem is to stand on it to stop it bending . But when it does pick up, it picks up some bits, but not everything. The carpet does not look like it has just been vacuumed. I will check the belt though.

Hi - yes - pretty long. To be honest I wouldn;t buy the upright if it was for mostly stairs as it;s never easy with an upright no matter how long the flex or hose as you still have to take the blinking thing with you! This one is a Sebo felix pet and comes with a 'parquet floor attachment'- presumably the pull alongs do too and they are utterly fab for kitchens etc - terribly easy to swap heads too.

PavlovtheCat · 16/01/2009 17:21

staryeyed - yes please, if you could that would be good! Is it upright or cylinder?

Chasingsquirrals - damn I posted before reading your reply!

DH and I were just talking. We could always get a handheld vacuum for the stairs if we had to. Might be easier to clean then anyway.

OP posts:
staryeyed · 16/01/2009 17:23

cylinder. Now let me find the paperwork.....

PavlovtheCat · 16/01/2009 17:23

Clucky - I would not say it was mostly for stairs, as currently they hardly get done as it is such a pain for hardly any noticeable difference , but if I can get one that will do them, I will of course do it more!

have to say, I have just brought a new vacumn, skimmed the instruction manual and saw point re belts, went and got old vacumn manual - took it apart and hey presto, belt broken.
New cleaner going back to argos tomorrow and will buy new belts for £4 instead.

OP posts:
staryeyed · 16/01/2009 17:32

yes I do believe its the same. well done you.

mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 16/01/2009 20:47

have a look on the john lewis website at the sebo komfort 1. they are £100 with a 5 year guarantee. I tried both the sebo and the miele in the shop and prefered the sebo by a longshot.

PavlovtheCat · 16/01/2009 21:30

oh i shall look at that one too Mrsleroy! Cheap is good!

OP posts:
mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 16/01/2009 21:46

here but showing at £169. They have the price wrong as I bought one not less that 3 weeks ago the day they reduced the price down to £100 in the Norwich store
