New Cotbed Mattress for new baby?!

DD (3) is being chucked out of her cotbed due to the immanent arrival of DD2, who is due early March. We've ordered a brand new spanking single bed for DD1.

We bought a new mattress for the cotbed in March last year, when we converted it from a cot to a cot bed for DD1. The new mattress is a good one from John Lewis, pocket sprung etc.

DH is convinced we should get a new mattress for the baby, even though it's less than a year old. He thinks it won't be "suitable" for a newborn. I've checked on the John Lewis website and it doesn't say anything about only being suitable from 6 months or anything.... it was over a hundred quid so I'd prefer not to get a new one!

Is there any reason we should get a new one?

i think you need to buy a new mattress for a new baby

i think some SIDS research recommends it

something to do with spores -

I contacted FSIDS last week and you DON'T need a new mattress for a new baby if you use a waterproof matress cover and the mattress isn't dented which a pocket sprung one is - pocket sprung fine for a newborn no problem.

If you buy a foam mattress it is likely to be mishapen and you need a new one.

The stuff about spores and chemicals in the mattress is not proven just like alot of the SIDS advice.
