This is the first birthday party dd has had (5), we are going for a pirate theme (she's not very girly), i have ordered some part boxes instead of bags, where can i buy some pirate things to go inside? What do you put in party bags? How much do i spend on each?

my dd was a pirate type at 5 too! i always collect 'bits' for party bags form lots of different places. bargains mainly, as it can really add up. Some pre made for the market packs of party toys are quite good, some are a bit samey.

It depends what you think you can afford? You have to take into account gender too. A pack of glitter pens broken down, mini note books? sorry i am not being very inspiring here. I tend to just 'see' things when out.

I will have a look when i go into town, its for 6 girls and 4 boys, only really wanted to spend around 10 pound for the whole lot (less if i can).

you can always mix in litle toys and sweets.

I'm a great fan of buying packs and breaking them up. Pens, pencils, especially fancy ones that can be used as stamps etc are good. For the girls, packs of hair things or necklaces/bracelets etc. Definitely some sweets - multi packs of fun size bars or a box of Roses-type things. Chocolate coins would make pirate treasure. Balloons.

A few little sweets - mini milky ways and packs of buttons etc. I tend to put little hair slides etc for girls (have a boy so love having an excuse to buy pretty and girlie!). Little car or pencil and/or notebook for boys. Maybe a balloon.

Easy to do for under a tenner I would have thought. I love doing party bags - sad person that I am!

masses of possibilites on here
what about making the party bags like 'treasure' with gold coins and a map

Does anyone know where i can buy choc-coins, i only seem to see them at x-mas, i wanted to make a treasure chest cake with choc coins in .

Im excited about doing party bags but worried i will go OTT and spend a fortune .

I think i will go for pencils, notepads, balloons, sweets and hairbands for the girls maybe pirate tatoos for the boys.

www.bakerross.co.uk - look under toys/pocket money - they do lots of cheap little toys in multipacks - you might struggle to be totally pirate themed, though...

cremolafoam · 15/01/2009 12:41

gold coins

EldonAve · 15/01/2009 12:49

The Works is also a good place to try

Marne · 15/01/2009 14:03

I have ordered; Tatoo's (for the boys), stickers, note pads and lip gloss watches (for the girls). So if i get some balloons, pencils and sweets do you think that will be enough?

Plenty.

For my dtwins pirate party bags I did the cardboard treasure chest with a blow up parrot, plastic skeleton and choc coins. The girls had a glittery bracelet, flip flop rubbers and choc coins I think all from Party Pieces soooo many people commented on them.

I was going to put in edible necklaces too but reined myself in at the last minute

For ds' last birthday I bought "paint-your-own-plates". They were on sale in Tesco. They all painted a plate each, I cooked them while they played/ate food then put it into a paper bag (that they'd decorated themselves!) and that was their going home gift. Oh and a Kinder egg (on offer in Lidl!).

I think the plates were £1.50 each. You can also get pggy banks, cups, bowls etc.

Astrophe · 18/01/2009 01:08

Maybe do a pirate treasure hunt as one of the games, and have them find the coins/sweets whatever to fill their own boxes? (Have a few extras aside for those kids who don't find many themselves!)

What you list above is PLENTY - remember, its juts a fun little treat, don't spend too much!
