How do I choose a washing machine?

Our's has packed in and is not worth fixing.
So how do we choose a new one? Where do I start? Can anyone recommend any?
I do about 5 loads a week, generally pretty "clean" washing so currently often use the eco quick wash.
Don't want a washer/drier.
Do I need to spend a lot?

Help!

I'm watching with interest, as mine's starting smoking tonight, and is not repairable.

Why oh why does it have to be when I have no money!!!!

Help too.

When we got ours, we looked to see what were Which! best buys - you might be able to see a copy of Which! at a local library. We went for a pricey Miele (though cheapest in range) and it's been worth every penny, never any trouble and we're now 5 years on and using it loads for baby washing. Our initial decision was helped by reviews on this site: www.washerhelp.co.uk/reviews/washing-machine-reviews.html

Hope this helps.

You look for any Bosch in your price range.

Big drum

Energy efficient

Fast spin

(Good price obviously!)

Thank you. Sounds like good suggestions, and thanks, it had not occured to me to measure the gap!

Pavlovthecat - sorry meant to ask, is Bosch a good make?

IMO yes it is. We bought a hotpoint 2 years ago, it is such shit a bad machine. We wanted Bosch but it was a bit too expensive as we wanted washer/dryer. However, we regretted it quite soon after. We are waiting for it to break so we can get a Bosch (but not yet, as it is January, bad month for things to break eh?). I also have a Hotpoint fridge/freezer. Both items have broken around 6 times in the last two years, some in warranty, some without, fridge replaced, dryer part of machine no longer works.

I know a lot of people who have Bosch everything and they are consistently good. I have heard no reports of issues with Bosch. We have a dishwasher, had it over a year, not a smidge wrong with it, and you can get parts for up to like 20 years. When we bought the dishwasher, I asked for MN advice, and Bosch came up pretty much exclusively.

It depends on money - if you can afford the best, probably Miele is the best. But for reasonable money Bosch, without a doubt.

That sounds like a pretty resounding recommendation for Bosch!

My washing machine repair man said to buy Bosch, as he had never been called out to repair one, and because the filter is accesible in a Bosch, you can get any crap out yourself rather than pay someone to come and sort it if it gets blocked.
