Amber Teething Necklaces - Con or cure?

Have been v sceptical of these - can't understand how amber is supposed to "vibrate" or whatever and give off healing vibes. (Though I suppose I don't quibble that quartz vibrates in a watch to make it work?)

Anyway, DD3 is the worst of mine when it comes to teething pain - huge red cheeks and screaming in the evening. I'm resorting to Calpol as the granules don't seem to have much effect anymore but would rather not do this for more than a couple of nights at a time.

So, if I buy one of these "magic" necklaces am I just buying an expensive piece of kids' jewellery or is there any truth in it?

(And I know she can't wear it asleep but as I'm having to cuddle her to sleep at the mo anyway when she gets toothache, I figure it would be easy enough to slip off the necklace when she's dropped off).

I'm looking at eBay ones at the moment, better than the £20 a friend gave to a posh baby shop! I may well get one anyway, but would like to know if I'm hoping too much.

I was sceptical but bought one figuring it couldn't hurt. It really did seem to make a difference.

Housemum · 15/01/2009 09:01

any other opinions out there?

It is really making a difference to my 7month old! highly recommend them! but make sure to get one with a magnetic clasp so that if it gets caught etc it just opens, our magnet it pretty strong and never yet come off, just like to know that she can never be strangled with it!

well it gives them something to chew on at least, which is a good thing for teething. and they look nice!
def wouldn't spend £20 on one though

Is it just a string of amber beads?

Housemum · 15/01/2009 10:34

They are just amber beads - not long enough to get in the mouth and chew on - supposed to be the properties of amber that help relieve pain. Same idea I suppose as copper for rheumatism, that sort of thing.
