what comes after the bouncy chair?

my 4 month old loves her chair but is very long and weighs almost 20lb so i don't think it's safe for her anymore, especially as she is trying to sit up in it.

she wasn't comfy in a bumbo as too much of her back stuck out at the top and her little legs were a bit fat for the leg holes!

i tried an inflatable ring but she braced her legs against the sides and i think she might propel herself out.

i wondered about a beanbag of some sort but i just read a review of the doomoo and it suggested not great when babies are trying to sit as they can tip it over.

and, just to be difficult, i'm not wild about the baby walker-type gadgets as i heard they are not great for the baby's pelvis due to the position they put them in (although open to persuasion)

any suggestions? i carry her a lot in the sling but can't do it all day long.

we have bought the uber bouncy chair
hold on will link

ChasingSquirrels · 09/01/2009 19:50

lying on floor with things

MissisBoot · 09/01/2009 19:51

how about propping her up on the floor with some cushions behind her? As she's trying to sit up is probably won't be long til she actually does.

FrannyandZooey · 09/01/2009 19:51

here you go

i am still waiting to see if he can tip it over

they have it cheap in t*sco's

choufleur · 09/01/2009 19:51

normal beanbag. if it's too firm take some of the 'beans' out. and lying on teh floor.

door bouncer thingy. DS loved his and would spend ages bouncing about

Pseudocreme · 09/01/2009 19:55

DD was massive too and spent any time in her bouncy chair trying to sit up anyway. Similarly, too big for the bumbo.

The floor with cushions is always good. Tummy time, propped up with cushions, lying down and reaching/starting to roll.

Diva0507 · 09/01/2009 20:03

i would recommend galt ring. ds was too heavy for bouncy chair early months. or bean bag chair. both dc never used bumbo[fat thighs]

are you looking for general baby entertainment or a bouncer replacement? we've just given up the bouncy chair at 8months! he just loved laying back in it and swinging his legs out the end. we borrowed it off sister in law, who's next baby is due in a couple of weeks so he now lays propped up on the floor with a BF curved pillow - although sometimes he rolls over the side of it and isn't impressed when he lands on his tummy!

am 10weeks pregnant so looking at getting the fisher price infant to toddler rocking chair so they can both use it, and so baby number 2 won't outgrow it. think it's £40-50 but am keeping an eye on ebay. there's also a baby bjorn bouncer i think that is suitable as a toddler seat but is £99.

what about an activity gym? we spend the day alternating between bumbo, floor with cushions, activity gym, baby bouncer, or just laying next to the mirror in the bathroom (it's floor to ceiling)on his changing mat while i faff about!

dizzydixies · 09/01/2009 22:13

another fat thigh child here

still on her bouncy but my older two loved their graco standy up thingy, and subsequently trashed it, so have ordered one of those as well

Lilyloo · 09/01/2009 22:15

Fisher price jumperoo.
I got this for dd but not until she was 7 mth
she used it until 1 but wish i had got it earlier to get more use from it.

babyphat · 10/01/2009 01:04

ooh i like the look of the infant-toddler one, thanks F&Z.

the jumperoo looks fun but says only good to 25lb so don't think would get enough use from it. looking in particular for bouncer replacements - i need something i can pop her in while i shower or cook and occasionally turn my back on, so don't think a beanbag/cushions would be quite safe enough.

she has a baby gym and we do tummy time and prop her up with cushions but she gets bored fairly quickly lying down but loves being upright. the bouncy chair means we can eat dinner and stuff

thanks everyone!

tummy time, they may moan a little in the beginning but will start crawling very early on. Put things in front of them to reach and get. We used our travel cot as a safe place for tummy time whilst I got on with things with toys/ mirrors to reach, and my DS was crawling by 5.5 months.
