AMBY NEST HAMMOCK THING? Rave reviews in MN products reviews, but has anyone used one?

Thinking of getting 2 of these for the twins I'm expecting as they've received such rave reviews. Does anyone have any experience using them? Opinions would be helpful before I shell out.

Yes - we had one for dd. I loved it and she seemed to as well. Its hard to know whether it performs the miracles the reviews seem to suggest (in terms of babies sleeping better), because I have nothing to compare it to but they do look good and are easily transportable so can be used as travel cots etc.

They also get really good prices second hand on ebay so, although the initial outlay is expensive, you do get some back.

DD's lasted until she was about 8 months but she was a very big baby. The transition to cot bed (which I was really worried about) wasn't too bad. About 2 nights of unsettled sleep and then back to normal

HTH. Let me know if you have any other queries

mrsdisorganised · 07/01/2009 18:22

I think they are brilliant! Only had it for 2 of my dd's wish I'd had it for all!!
Can be used for as long as baby is not trying to escape!! Just double up the springs as baby gets heavier...

Schmauskin · 07/01/2009 18:26

It's sounding more interesting ladies - thanks. Tillys, glad the transition to a cotbed was uneventful, that was my next question! mrsd - do they come with extra springs or do you have to order more?

OP posts:
Tillyscoutsmum · 07/01/2009 18:28

They come with the standard spring and I think you can get one up to 40lb but tbh, dd was too big (lengthwise) for it way before she was too heavy for the standard spring iyswim

Pic on profile of dd in hers - looking very snug

Schmauskin · 07/01/2009 18:32

Tillys - your pics are great, what a beautiful girl you have and yes, she does look snug. Will add the nests to my list.

mrsdisorganised · 07/01/2009 18:45

we ordered an extra spring

Schmauskin · 07/01/2009 18:48

plus extra springs!

Ive got one for my 1st baby due april, Ive used them before (work as nanny) And loved them, baby loved them too, some of babies would of probably slept anywhere and others wouldnt settle at all.
The transition from amby to cot was good too had no probs when it came round to moving them.
Ive used past 6mth, even past 12mth.. My last charge was in til 15mth and she was a big 10lb 14 baby!!!
There is a risk at that age thou that they sit up and move above-try to get out, we just padded the floor with couple of pillows for a crash landing!

Ewe · 07/01/2009 21:41

Loved, loved, loved mine! Would have kept DD in it forever and bought one for myself if they made them bigger

Aitch · 07/01/2009 21:46

dd1 loved it, was in it until 9 mos with no problems transitioning. dd2 was prem and slept well in hers from the beginning. if you're having twins there's a likelihood they'll turn up earlier, it's SO CUTE seeing a teeny wee baby in there. i'd try both babies together to begin with, or buy the bolster pillows.

Schmauskin · 07/01/2009 23:11

Wow - I'm impressed by all your positive stories. I suffered so much through lack of sleep with my dd (now 4) that I'll try anything to help them go through the night ASAP!

yes defo the best thing i ever brought. DD2 loved it, was fabby and she staye din there as long as possible. Only thing i would say is buy a little mobile that ties on as normal mobiles dont fit. resale is good price too HTH

think theres pic on my profile of dd2 in hers too

mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 08/01/2009 08:28

Phew I bought one for my bump before it was a bump so I am chuffed to hear this.
my ds was a bit of a nightmare with the sleeping thing and dd had colic and I have heard that they are good for this too so cant wait.

mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 08/01/2009 08:32

meant to say that the moffii is also a good option. quite expensive but great

jellybeans · 09/01/2009 23:23

YES they are truly fab

SpeccieSeccie · 09/01/2009 23:29

YES - and it was a total waste of money. DS slept in it for one night then the midwife came over and said that Scottish midwives couldn't endorse them because of something to do with something (baby's back not straight I think) so had to pack it away. Also, we couldn't get it to sit right - it was always a bit squint. Meant to send it back for a refund but was new stressed out mum so never did. Maybe they'd have refunded me so it's my fault for not trying, I suppose. Whenever we're talking about people spending unnecessary money on baby things DH always says 'Yeah, like the Amby Nest' - he still resents it!

SpeccieSeccie · 09/01/2009 23:31

Should add that that was 21 months ago and maybe Scottish midwives can endorse them now. Mine hadn't come across one before.

mrsdisorganised · 10/01/2009 09:59

SpeccieSeccie Haven't heard of any downsides from Scottish midwives, I first used mine 5 years ago and we never had a problem with the midwives, we're in the Highlands, maybe they were protecting themselves in case of an incident....it's a shame you didn't use it, maybe in the future or you could sell it on ebay....

AnguaVonUberwald · 10/01/2009 10:02

We had one and it was great for six months, after that, not so much, In fact I wish we had stopped using it sooner.

DS could roll over in it, sit up, we couldn't leave him to settle himself, as he would be on his face and could roll back over!

I found it very stressful and dangerous. And the people at Amby were useless - they said he would roll over once, not like it and then stop.

So, good for a while, but a lot of money for something he could only use for six months!

AnguaVonUberwald · 10/01/2009 10:02

Sorry, that should have been couldn't roll back over

macollins · 24/12/2010 12:54

I've inherited an Amby Nest from my sister in law but have a couple of concerns I was wondering if someone could help me with.
Firstly, she gave me two mattresses for it but I wonder if I need to buy new ones? They aren't currently available (and haven't been for a while) on the Amby website. Can they be found anywhere else?
Secondly, I didn't get any instructions with it and am worried I'll put the baby in the wrong way and do smething wrong. Does anyone have some instructions they could send me (please, please, please) or know where these can be found - again, I've looked on the Amby site but can't find anything.
Thank you all - this is my first post!

donttrythisathome · 03/01/2011 01:05

Hi macollins here are instructions for the amby.

I loved mine. As you know it is really important that you assemble it correctly and make sure the baby's head is higher than her body.

I just wanted to add this link from the information for healthcare professionals site regarding baby sleep positions.
www.isisonline.org.uk/hcp/sleep_and_health/sleep_aids/hammocks/
they do not feel that the hammocks pose any additional threat for SIDS but feel that there is a risk of baby's airways becoming compromised.
Make up your own mind, but we decided not to use the hammock based on this information.
