Please help me find compact, easy to push buggy for heavy 2 year old

We are currently using a graco citisport for ds2 and it's killing me pushing him on the school run as I am still recovering from spd. My mum also uses it and is having trouble too. I'm dreading just taking him anywhere now because it's hurting me but he only started walking at 17 months, just can't make it to the school or the local shops.

I just want something fairly compact as we have a double mountain buggy already for the dt's, relatively easy to fold & stick in the car to take to my mum's house and most of all easy to push so preferably bigger tyres than the citisport. Have looked at the graco Expedition but don't think I can manage with fixed wheel, would drive me crazy. I wanted to buy secondhand as we only need it for under a year really and have two double buggies already!

Suggestions please??!!!

I've had a maclaren before (a quest I think) and didn't find it easy to push on the streets at all. Just don't get on with small wheels & I do find the maclaren brake and shopping baskets a PITA! The graco is particularly narrow I find which also makes it uncomfortable to push, you're sort of hunching your shoulders together to push it. Arggh.

I find our Luna much easier to push than the umbrella fold buggies, it is so lovely to puch and feels really light to push even with my 4year old nephew in it (he isnt huge though!) - might be worth a play if you are in mamas and papas!

Maclaren like pushing a tank with a heavy toddler...Micralite, weightless. Well worth trying DC in one, DD is 3.5yrs and in one daily .

nappyaddict · 12/01/2009 22:55

AM which maclaren did you have?

AccidentalMum · 14/01/2009 09:09

XT and XLR at diferent times. Also Volo, which was admittedly nippy but bone shaking. I had 3 weeks of pain in my wrists after a long walk over nothing rougher than shoddy pavements.

nappyaddict · 14/01/2009 10:03

Do you think XT and XLR are heavy to push then? Was thinking of getting either of those you see. Might rethink that now. How heavy was your lo? DS is 31 lbs I think.

nappyaddict · 14/01/2009 10:04

Sorry meant to say heavier to push than any other bog standard stroller. Obviously it will be heavier to push than something with air tyres.

AccidentalMum · 14/01/2009 10:09

Big jump from XT to XLR which is enormous (you really feel it in shops) and very heavy. XT is fine TBH just not as easy as my ML, but has the lovely big hood, footrest, full recline etc, so other benefits. It was much nicer to push than a Pulse. DD has been about 30lbs for ages.

nappyaddict · 14/01/2009 10:15

Is XLR heavier to push or just heavier to lift?

AccidentalMum · 14/01/2009 17:25

very much heavier to push and steer.

Ds went in our micralite until 3, although he would have fitted in it for longer. We have the fastfold though, have no idea about the toro.

It is light to push and the back wheels are lovely. I like that it has the one handle rather than 2, which ,means you can push with one hand.

nappyaddict · 14/01/2009 19:37

Damn but the XT is so booooooooring. It only comes in black or grey

AccidentalMum · 14/01/2009 19:39

...'tis that...

AnneOfAvonlea · 14/01/2009 19:39

I just bought a Chicco CT 0.6. It's nice.

mogs0 · 14/01/2009 20:04

I haven't read all the replies but I bought a Micralite fastfold when ds was almost 2 and he used it until he was about 3 and a bit for the 30 minute walk to and from nursery. He wasn't a particularly big 2/3yr old but def not small!! The air-filled wheels made all the difference and I noticed a huge difference if I used any other buggy. I still have it (ds is 6 now), my friend used it for her heavy toddler and now it's a spare for CMing.

I'd also recommend an Urban Detour. I used a double for when I was nannying with ds as a small tot and regularly carried 2 hefty toddlers in it. I haven't used the single version but would imagine that it would be as good as the double and you can pick them up cheap 2nd hand.

Thanks for all the advice, if I can find a micralite to try out I'll definitely consider one.

The micralite fastfold also freestands when folded which is great when you are loading and unloading and you can put the brake on when it's folded.

I use mine with a carrycot added on now for DD. The pushchair bit just folds up into a little bag ready for use.

However: the shopping basket is crap.
