Help- my ipod has died! Anyone any experience of this??

Hi. Our ipod is just under a year old, and died on NYE for no apparent reason. It sits in a docking station which charges it automatically. The radio/ aux function on the docking station is working fine. Tried charging ipod on the computer, but nothing. There is a slight burnt smell from the ipod itself, and it is as dead as a dead parrot

Really loathe to buy a new one- has anyone any experience of getting an ipod revived? Can they be fixed? Not sure about guarantees etc- we still have the box, but DH bought it in the Gulf when he was out there last year. Any help/ info much appreciated!

when we bought one just before last christmas, we were told by pc world that once the battery dies, the ipod dies. the battery lasts approx 12 - 18 months, depends on how often it's used.

LadyMuck · 03/01/2009 19:55

The burnt smell isn't a good sign is it?

I have occasionally had to go for a full reset - you will need to check your type to see what is involved, but it usually involves lying the ipod flat on its back and pressing the centre of the centre button and the menu button at the same time for a few seconds.

Hmm- can the battery be replaced, or is it time for an ipod funeral?

reset doesn't appear to be working (is this the ipod equivalent of CPR?)

PC World know nothing. I have iPods that have been used every day and still hold a full charge and it is possible to get the battery changed. Burning sounds a different matter though.

If it's just under a year old, speak to Apple and find out how much it will cost to 'fix' it (they actually replace it). It might be less than a new one.

Ah, just seen that it was bought abroad. Might be tricky, they're funny about hardware bought outside the country. If you can't revive it, I'd probably wave bye bye to it tbh...

dh's died like this a few times grrrr

step 1 - check the serial number on apple and see when the 12 month guarantee ran out

step 2 - purchase an extension

step 3 - wait a few days and tell them it's died. They will send you a box, you place dead ipod in box, send it off and they give you a replacement

LadyMuck · 03/01/2009 20:03

Yes, it is CPR!

If you contact Apple they should tell you how much it will cost to place the battery. If you haven't got a receipt then you'll probably have to pay. You may find a high street repair shop which will do it on site saving you 2x postage.

Thank you ladies! Will check serial no/ box and chance my arm with apple in the first instance. Really loathe to part with the cash for a new one if it's only likely to last a year! Sob- will need to dust off my old faithful CDs and 10 yo CD player it seems!

But if the serial number is one registered in another country you probably won't be able to buy Apple Care or get it fixed by them here. They'll tell you to take it back to the point of sale.

foxinsocks · 03/01/2009 21:13

hmm don't know eyeball. Dh's first one was bought in the US and when it karked, we got it replaced here but I'm not sure how he had registered iyswim so maybe it depends on that

elkiedee · 03/01/2009 21:14

I bought one in the US a few years ago, and was able to get it replaced when it died, although it wasn't so close to a year old. Look on the Apple website, they'll let you know if they accept your claim.

chequersandroastedchestnuts · 03/01/2009 21:18

Sorry for hijack but the battery died in my Ipod last year and it won't charge any more.

I bought it in 2005 though, is there anything I can do?

EyeballsintheSky · 03/01/2009 21:25

Am happy to be proved wrong I am a member of a lot of Apple forums (am a Mac geek) and it has always been the case that they won't deal with foreign purchases. However, I bow to your experience if you've had results from them! Get in quick while you can if the warranty is still valid.

Good luck

Joolyjoolyjoo · 04/01/2009 00:23

Will definitely look into it tomorrow (too much wine quaffed now to be bothered tonight!) It says on it that it was "designed by Apple in California, assembled in China" hmm- and bought in Bahrain...oh well, worth a try!
