Can anyone help me on this one. My second baby is due in about 3 weeks' time and I want to get black out linings for our bedroom. This bedroom used to be an upstairs lounge and has a large picture window at the front and french style doors at the back. My dd has black out linings in her bedroom and I swear by these, but her window is small/standard and I got her's from Mothercare on line. Anyone know any websites that by the metre or make them to order?

How long are you expecting baby to be in your room for? It seems alot of expense for what may be only a few months. John Lewis sell black out linings and I have seen them in Rosebys too - not sure of sizes though.

John Lewis have teh blackout material in lots of different colours so will make up a blind or curtain for you to any size. It is quite expensive though - but IMO definately worth it

Thanks for the suggestions. Jaybee, baby will probably be in our room for about 3 or 4 months at least, possibly longer, and as we are heading into Spring and Summer this is why I'm keen to get the black outs. Also, my dh quite often has naps at funny times during the day and is always saying that he prefers to go to sleep in a really dark room, so they won't go to waste

We got our black-out linings from a market trader; he can make them up to any size you like. Is there a large street market near to where you live, Melly?

zebra · 17/03/2003 20:10

ps: and a street market trader is likely to be a lot cheaper than John Lewis, too.

Thanks Zebra, yes I bet John Lewis will be v. expensive. I live quite near Plymouth which has a market, not what you'd really describe as a large street market but it's certainly worth a try I suppose.
Thanks for the suggestion.

I got some large blackouts from Homebase recently, which fitted a window that was about 130 inches wide x about 90 deep. They did 3 sizes and that was the largest ? don't think they'd be long enough to completely cover your french doors, but they might help. Mine cost £30 the pair in the sale (normally £60). Might be worth a try?

We had a very large (wide) window and I had mine made by CH Fabric... mind you it costed £150!
IMO worth it. It is excellent quality and VERY dark!

I think our pair of black out curtains cost about £16, including all the sewing done by the market trader's sewer (I wanted blackout liners I could just hook onto existing curtains), to fit a window about 4'x4'.

pupuce · 17/03/2003 22:22

Sorry I should add mine were not curtains but roll-on blinds

Ikea do black out blinds which is better than curtains. Just get the blinds and add usual curtains. Cheaper and much more flexible. Wish I hadn't bothered getting black out lining as we have an old house and we'd have been better off if we had gone for curtains with interllining which is really good for keeping the draughts out and also the light. This is useful when you don't want to have central heating drying out the room for the baby. You can also add the blind if you want it extra dark.

I am curious do they make a difference, as our ds is waking early, wev'e just got curtains at the moment, i assume the ikea blinds can be cut to size?
