Travel mini bed for toddlers - is there such a thing?

Ds 17mts is in his own bed at home. He doesn't take kindly to cots with bars when we go visiting - he'll go to sleep OK but if he wakes up in the night he HOWLS with rage at being put back in the cot.

Over Christmas we are visiting people for a few nights and I'd like to have something to put him to sleep in. I'd like somehting that looks like a bed. The travel beds I have seen just seem to be in the US.

Anyone have anything they'd recommend? Thanks V much.

You can get inflatable "ready-beds" for toddlers - not something I ever tried, but they look quite effective example here

These have never worked with my ds, he is too tossy/turny and ends up crawling into our bed at some point. Sofa cushions on the floor with proper pillow and duvet are actually a bit more comfy and stable

We love the ready beds, ds has an in the night garden one, been sleeping on it while away since 18months.

Can someone tell me if the cover on the bed is permanently attached as DD is in a sleeping bag and doesn't need a cover too. Also, if anyone has found any more half-price offers that would be good to know - I also missed the Argos bargain. TIA.

Oh and another thing (or two) - is it possible to get one of these beds which is not Night Garden/Dora/Thomas/Bob blah-blah themed but just in nice plain colours?

Also, I've just read somewhere that the toddler ready beds are quite small. My dd is nearly two and quite tall. Is it better to get a junior bed or might that be too big?

Thank you, thank you, thank you

We have one very similar to this for DS - he's been using it since he was 2.6. I didn't see the point in a toddler one. He's slipped off the side a couple of times - just like he fell out of bed at home a couple of times, but with less thudding and crying .

Amazon have the ITNG one for £19.99

Iklboo · 15/12/2008 13:21

Ds loves his. The cover is removable for washing so you could get away with the sleeping bag. They're not that small - about 3 ft long I think?

orangina · 15/12/2008 13:24

still on sale at amazon (and free p&p). here

I have a DOra one for my son he has been using it since he was 20 months it's lovely.

The cover is attached but Id say you need something else because it's really thin but a pillow and fleece blanket fit in the bag with the bed.

My DS is about the size of a 3YO and he still has a good year or so left in it. We did put him in a normal junior ready bed but I got rid of that, my little cousin had a bit of a scare in one because he tolsses and turns he almost suffocated through the night as he rolled it over whilst the sleeping bag was covering him and it all went on top of him.

He was 3.5YO and couldnt get out of it. So I'd say go for the toddler one for now.

The alternative which we have done quite a bit is to take a cot mattress with us - without the cot bars this was certainly OK for ds at 3 - and probably longer than that - then take his own bedcovers, borrow a couple of cushions to stop rolling out and place against a wall on one side...

Thanks, everyone. I managed to get the ITNG one from John Lewis for the bargain price of £14.65! If anyone's interested they don't have any left online but still have some in the real life stores. Some are on the shelf priced at £29 but still scan in at £14.65 so worth asking.
