Sorry...another double pushchair question

Does a double buggy exist that is side by side, easy to push, fits through a standard doorway and compact when folded? Not looking much i know!!

I am currently 38 wks pregnant and DD is 18 months old. DH says that I won't need a double buggy but reading through other threads I think that I will. I'm trying to get sorted out in my head one that will be most useful for my needs, rather than when I have a newborn and will be sleep deprived and pick out the first one I see.

Or has anyone managed with this age gap without a double buggy, I currently have a pliko p3

Thanks

We have a grand vitara, only have it about 6 months or so so will not be changing anytime soon. The aria doesn't take up that much space, it is compact as I could've fitted loads of stuff behind it, its just the way its a sort of square shape when folded rather than rectangular which would've fitted better!

Are you due shortly?

I have 4 dc and had only a 14 month gap between my middle two dc. I tried every double going and ended up with a phil & ted, I struggled to push anything other than a decent 3 wheeler whether it was side by side or the phil.

My jane powertwin folds up really small compared to double maclaren in boot of VW golf.

You definitely need a double with an 18 month gap IMHO, unless you intend to carry baby in sling, as your 18 month old will not want to walk all the time, esp not when they see the little one in the buggy being pushed around!

Quattrocento · 13/12/2008 14:31

I have the same age gap as you did, and I never needed a double buggy.

Think people get mildly obsessed with buggies - on here at any rate.

SleighGirl · 13/12/2008 14:39

Quatro I had a non walking 14 month old, chronic spd, could hardly walk, have a bad upper back and have 10lb very tall babies, I am a tiny 5' size 8 so baby wearing isn't an option for me. I really didn't have an option!!!! I could physically push a 4 wheeled pushchair because of the shooting pains from my pelvis. We walk lots rather than drive so having a suitable pushchair is very essential for some people.

ShirleyL · 13/12/2008 14:44

Quattro if you don't mind me asking what way did you work it?

DD walked. It was easy because I was healthy and DD was healthy and the walking was good for her.

ShirleyL · 14/12/2008 00:55

Thanks Quattro, my dd is a good walker as well but she has a mind of her own and she could run off very easily and shes too young to understand which is why I think I definately will need a double for a while anyway.

I have a mothercare pheonix (spelling?) Tadem and I love it. Number 2 isn't even born yet but I already use it with DD It is no harder to push than a lot of singles I have used and the back seat is suitable from birth. Has loads of shopping space which is the main thing I love as it means I can walk to town. You can use the carseat on the back as well if needed.

I am going to have a 16 month age gap and think it will work perfectly for me.

MIL (who is a CM) has a mclauren and hates it. It is very heavy to push and gives her backache so she drives everywhere.

ShirleyL · 14/12/2008 01:34

Hi Chloe, I personally just prefer side by side, think its because my dd still likes to sleep when i'm out walking and most of the tandems have very little recline and then most people say how they get heavy when the older one is in the front.
Its just so hard to decide.

I really like the combi we2 now but haven't actually seen one and a lot of reviews on it say how the child can't sit upright and seems to be slumped.

don't get a we2 shirley that was my first double nearly 18m ago I hated!! you certainly need a double don't let anyone tell you any different, i really didn't want one but with an 18m gap i am still using a double now most days and ds2 is 3yrs old nearly and ds3 is 17m (almost same age as his brother when he came along iykwim! and i couldnt imagine him walking everywhere!!!)

combi we2 felt flimsy, hard to push, neither newborn or toddler was comfy in seats, footmuffs and liners useless pita. only good thing was the fold and lightness i'd say,b ut then it was so flimsy.

i then bought a cosatto duet lite, crap its not 'lite' useless. then had two umbrella folds as ds3 got older, my favourite was the maclaren as huge maclaren fan but this summer it was becoming a nightmare to push as ds3 was getting bigger, i found myself resorting to single and making ds2 walk whic wasn'ts always an option (don't drive and often walk long distances in all weathers) so we got a p&t it was a revelation i love it. Good luck in your search you certainly need a double especially in the winter.

Tandems imo are heavy to steer push and get up kerbs, what works now with an 18m old and a newborn is going to be soooo much heavier a year down the line with two toddlers! i like the p&t as it has flexibility of becoming a single as well.

chloemegjess · 14/12/2008 13:41

The out and about nipper 360 is meant to be very good. I have a tiny boot so needed a tiny buggy which is why the tandem worked well, but I do have a side by side for when they are older (which I had anyway from childminding).

The thing I didn't like about most side by sides is that they never look comfy for little tiny babies.

accessorizequeen · 14/12/2008 14:05

The baby jogger city mini is great for my dt's with sheepskin liners, very flat and enclosed but most seem awful for newborns I agree. FWIW I am thinking of p&t for later!

ShirleyL · 16/12/2008 12:23

Thanks for all your help everyone, have just ordered the cosatto you2 from boots.com, down to £150 so think i've picked up a bargain

I had a cosatto side by side i really liked it unfortunately it broke so got a maclaren twin triumph instead, they were very similar but the cosatto had an adjustable leg rest. hope you like it!
