Cat litter tray - are there good ones and bad ones?

We (or rather I) have decided that the cat needs a litter tray. He's getting old, he's not so steady on his legs and he's losing weight (he has hyper thyroidism) so he doesn't like being outside for too long any more.

The last time I bought a litter tray was about 14 years ago and I'm hoping someone has since invented a clean convenient non-smelling nice looking tray that will be acceptable to my fussy beyond fussy DH and also to my gorgeous cat.

Any tips please??

TIA

get one with a lid. Nothing worse than seeing a tray full of cat shit in your house!

We had one with a lid and a semi-transparent door (like a lightweight cat flap). It was quite good for keeping smells in. Quite large though - looked a bit like one of those modern plastic cat carriers. Possibly your cat might find it a bit too much to cope with if it's not used to a cat tray.

thanks guys. I like the idea of it being like a house so that it's all hidden away. I haven't yet come up with a good place to keep it. We are very open plan downstairs apart from the play room and study but I'm not going to put a tray in either of those rooms because of children and visitors.
It's got to be the kitchen area-ish but then I hate the thought of food and cat's mess being in the same area.

Where do other people keep theirs? Am i being too precious about this?

I've just been onto PetPlanet.co.uk to see what types they sell. I can spend anything up to £250!!! Now I really love my cat but

My friend keeps hers in the downstairs loo! Her cat sits outside & waits his turn!!

We had a large lidded one with a carbon filter in the lid, it was great, but when tiny kittens we had to tape the flap open as they didn't know how to get in!

We kept ours in a cupboard in the hall (the old airing cupoard) with the door held permanently ajar with a doorstop so that pusscat could get in and out. Used litter that didn't make dust so that everything didn't get covered. I know plenty of people that keep them in the bathroom which sort of makes sense but I could never get my head around having a nice soak in the bath whilst looking at/catching a sniff of a cat tray!

aha, we have a cupboard under the stairs where we keep out of season footwear and the hoover. That might be the best place me thinks. Thanks guys for those tips.

I have mine outside the back door and took the door off the litter tray.

spicemonster · 03/12/2008 22:15

If I had a cupboard under the stairs it'd be there but mine's in the bathroom and yes definitely one with a lid (if your cat uses a catflap shouldn't be any problem for him)

mckenzie · 04/12/2008 11:03

we don't have any cat flaps so it might take a bit of getting used to but like some others have said, i can always take the flap off to start with huh?
