DD seems too big for her (tiny) cot. Should I move her into a cotbed, toddler bed or just a single bed?

She is 2.2 and is in the smallest cot I could find because we lived with my parents when she was born and there was only just about space in my room for a really small one. She has started being unsettled at night and I keep hearing her turn over and bump into the sides of her cot so its probably time to move her. Obviously a single bed would be most cost effective as then she would have the same bed for years and years. Then I could buy a rail to attch to it to stop her falling out? But most people seem to go for toddler beds or cot beds then take the sides off so is this because they are lower down so less distance if they fall out?

use a guard rail on a single bed
put a duvet on th efloor in case

DS has a single bed with a bed rail (we got the rail from Argos) and he loves it cos he's got lots of room to move around when he's asleep plus room at the foot to sit and read/play if he wakes up a bit early.
It's quite a low bed anyway and he has no trouble getting in and out of it

Oh I'm glad you said that! So assuming you have done this, how old was your DC when you moved him or her? Ikboo was the bed Argo too? Does he not get up and play in the night or come and get you up? I am worried DD would be a pest if she could get up but she does need moving. Maybe she won't realsie she can? (hopeful!)

you cxan always put a stairgate on their door

used2bthin · 03/12/2008 14:55

Ys I will probably have to do that mrsBadger. I've got visions of getting up and finding she's emptied all my cupboards otherwise(we live in a flat)

DD went ztraight into a bed at about 2 and a month. She didn't seem to realise for a LLllooooonnngg time that she could actually get out under her own steam. And has never been difficult in terms of staying put.

DS moved into single bed (like dd) at about 2 and a half. Again, he doesn't try and get out. Their doors are shut (they have small night light) though.

Don't bother with a cot bed or toddler bed. Also having a full single means that you can snuggle with them when you read which is lovely.

oh I kept mine penned in for years

used2bthin · 03/12/2008 14:59

Good point Pooka. She s getting so grown up though, a proper bed ! good to hear that your DC didn't try and get up hope y DD is the same. Its all so expensive, any ideas on where I can get a decent bed and mattress for not much money? Just looked at Ikea and nothing looked right. Anywhere or is it Argos or Argos?

I put both of mine straight into single beds (one at 2 and the other at 18 months), but didn't put the legs on the bed until they had learnt not to fall out. Just put the mattress on the bed base on the floor and hey presto! This also means that they can get into bed far more easily so tend to like the whole idea better from the start. I got a basic pine bed from Argos. The bedstead quality was fine, but the mattress is a bit rubbish, but is fine for whilst they are little.

used2bthin · 03/12/2008 15:12

Oh woldn't have thought of that good idea! Think I will go and look at Argos now, it does seem to be the only place suitable for my budget other than ikea.

my dds both went into a regular single bed at 18 months with no problems

dont buy a toddler bed - save yourself the money IMO

Lubyloo · 03/12/2008 15:20

I would put her straight into a single bed as it will be much more cost effective. I have never bothered with a guard rail with my DD. I just turned the duvet sideways so that it was well tucked in to help stop her falling out and put her old cot mattress on the floor so she had a soft landing. She only fell out of bed twice (and didn't wake up either time! )

I think a single bed is definately sounding like the sensible option, good that others have done the same without problems!
