we have loads of small stuff and a 4.5 and 2.5 year old they both play with it happily.

I would get a random bucket. or ebay stuff
Happy shoppping - good choice - keeps the boys busy for ages making different things. (mostly airplanes)

gigglewitch · 30/11/2008 21:07

we got a big box of lego from toys r us, for ds2's 4th b'day, which had a few small bits in it which were suitably confiscated until little sister dd was sensible enough not to eat them [around 3]
Much beter to get a box of muti stuff than a particular 'kit' thing at that age imo.

but make sure that you get wheels and steering wheels... they were the essential parts according to DS

mrsgboring · 30/11/2008 21:10

Yes, an Ebay assortment to start with. My DS likes to build the models too (with help) so maybe try a couple of the little sets you can get for about 3 quid - e.g. a minifigure and a bin on wheels.

gigglewitch · 30/11/2008 21:14

this or this
we've got the larger one, but it must have been on some sort of offer because i am certain i paid £20 not 30 for it, this time last year. Toys r us and amazon seem to both have good offers on - hunt around.
Both my 8yo and (now) 5 yo play with it.

WaynettaSlob · 30/11/2008 21:18

I would say that it depends on whether your 4yo is creative enough to "make something up" or if he would be better with instructions.
We started getting my DS1 'proper' Lego when he was 4 (and DS2 was 2) and he loved it, and still plays with it. Look at the Lego City range - and don't be restricted by the age - DS1 has been on the 6+ since he was 4......

ladyjuliafish · 30/11/2008 21:18

I would get lego 5483. My ds got his last christmas when he was almost 4 and has only built a handful of things without wheels compared with thousands with wheels. If you get a smaller bucket or an ebay job lot then I would recommend buying extra wheels. You can get them on ebay and from the lego shop. You need axels too.

WaynettaSlob · 30/11/2008 21:20

stuff like this isn't too tricky

TheGarishlyTwinkleyMadHouse · 30/11/2008 21:22

Wow - thanks for the responses. I will take a good look. MIL has given us some money for it as her present to him.

DS2 loves the duplo and will sit for ages building castles etc

We have boought playmobil take along castle for the two of them.

Yes agree re wheels being vital.

Also agree Lego City is good - kits that make a motorcycle or a helicopter are good I find, esp if DS less creative(this is to do with age I find - DS1 who is 9 will endlessly make up Lego models in a way he never did at age 5).

this kind of thing is good IMO (tho I see it's sold out)

TheGarishlyTwinkleyMadHouse · 30/11/2008 22:30

lots of places are sold out it seems, popular stuff
