as he loves coffee, and has been hinting about one for ages. (I'm not really a coffee drinker)

So -
Would like it to make cappucino as well as a normal coffee.
Don't really want one that uses a pod system.
Easy to clean.
Black/chrome in colour
Budget is about £80/£100

Sorry, it's a pod machine but I bought a Dolce Gusto (the duck like one) yesterday at the Good Food show and seems lovely and simple. ie. very very little washing up, small enough to sit on the side, kids like it because it serves 'filtered' water.Got it for £79 with £20 cash back and freebies, if you know someone going to the show in Brum??

Looked at the Lavassa one too - fussy and bigger, froths milk but not automatically and seems that you need a knack and lots of practice to do it right. Pod machine too. £119!About 24p a cup.

Also - Magimix, also a pod machine and £130 but smaller, more stylish. Sorry, didn't hang around to test this one as too much money.

I was a bit worried about the pod thing and being expensive but works out at about 16 p a cup for our machine. As they said when they were selling it to us that is really quite good for a Starbucks quality coffee, which I suppose is true. We will still have the instant to fall back on though.

I suppose, that it comes down to a good machine with a pod, or an average machine without, then I'd go for the ones with a pod.

Suppose 16p a cup isn't that bad...

I use a plastic filter ontop of a large cup or jug. It makes great coffee. I put a paper (recycled)filter paper in, put in some ground coffee, pour on water & it drips through in about a minute. I have a Bodum milk frother which is fab - heat milk then put on the lid & froth up. I also have an aerolatte which is also good. Much cheaper & better than a coffee machine imho.

mmm, unfortunately all the ones we looked at seemed to have the pod things. I know that they seem a bit of a pain. May be worth a bit of a look on Amazon, did see a lovely Gaggia on there about £220 (gulp) but Italians all love it so must be good ? got a feeling that the pod system = less washing up and fiddling around.

If it's any help this Dolce one we have you just put your cup under the spout and press the hot button after putting your pod in. It heats the water instantly so no waiting, only thing is that it buzzes loudly whilst heating. then remove old pod and drink coffee.
It makes cappucino and froths, espresso, decaffeinated, cafe lungo, macchiato etc and also just use it for hot water for your tea and instant coffee. MUCH quicker than the kettle so you could almost put that away to make space for this machine.
Made a fab hot choc with it too.
Lavassa man said that the trouble with the Dolce is that it uses powdered milk but seems lovely and no standing around with a jug of milk and steaming it. Although some blokes love all this farting around don't they.

Really easy to refill and leave water in for days apparently, only washing up is the little tray that the cup stands on and that could just be run under the tap.

I really should be on commission!!

Have just bought the Dolce one online Looked at a few different reviews, and it seems to tick all the boxes (plus it make hot choc, which is a personal favourite)

Had quite a few vouchers for Tesco. Was originally £80, but with my vouchers, got it for £55, and can collect from my local store. Bargain!

Thanks for all your help

OMG. You move quick.
Really don't think you'll regret it.
Colour?

runnyhabbit · 28/11/2008 17:55

Lol.

Decided to go for the black one. Cream wouldn't go in our kitchen, and I know dh wouldn't like the red one.

Quite excited about it now (sad, I know )

EachPeachPearMum · 28/11/2008 18:04

Yay! I got DH a coffee maker for his birthday (just before christmas) too!
He is going to love it he has no idea- it is hidden at MIL's house ....

runnyhabbit · 28/11/2008 18:23

My mum hates gadgets like this (thinks too much cleaning's involved) but even she's curious to see what it's like, because apparently my dad has been on about one

...although she did say that she'll be looking forward to having a proper coffee made for her on Christmas Day, lol

Better start stocking up on the pods

I was thinking of getting a Dolce Gusto - they are £66 on Amazon at the moment.

TackyChristmasLights · 28/11/2008 19:30

yes, good deals really.
When I first saw it thought it looked at bit too wacky for me. But seems to sit quietly on my worktop and look quite stylish.

Magimix maker did look really gorgeous though, lush colours but not in my price range.

TackyChristmasLights · 28/11/2008 19:31

Black runny, nice one!

Coagulate · 28/11/2008 19:31

Don't get him a cofeee maker. It is a dull present.

TackyChristmasLights · 28/11/2008 19:33
