My 3.5yo DS is getting to a point now where we think he should be in a bigger bed, he is very tall and the longer he's in his cot bed (no cot side of course) the more difficult it'll be get him out of it. (picture 6ft 2 18 year old in Humphrey Corner bed!!!)

As storage is an issue and he likes the idea of a den we are considering the midi sleeper from next.

My only issue is, although it's not regular (we still carry him there everynight) he has taken himself to the toilet in the night. He also, sometimes, gets up in a morn (with a black out blind down) to wake us up. An di worry about the dark.

he doesn't get in and out of bed all night like some children he's really good. Once he's in bed, usually, that's it.

Can we trust him to shout us if he needs help or is it too much of a risk at this age that he might fall out or miss a step on the ladder.

It's only 119 cm high (or thereabouts)

He is very good at climbing.....

If it is any help my ds has been in a mid-sleeper since around 3.5, and the only real problem has been when he's decided to make a nest underneath, the number of times I've banged my head taking him for a wee! He certainly gets down ok when he wants to crep into bed with me...

You could try keeping him on the floor on his old mattress for the first few nights so he can practise the steps in the day, but I expect he'll be fine.
