Pillow for a one year old - any experience/knowledge?

DD has just turned 1. She sleeps in a grobag but I give her blanket as a comforter.
She used to cuddle it but for about 3 months she has screwing it into a heap and laying on it like a pillow.

I know she can have a pillow as she is over one and I think she would really like one.

Has anybody used a baby pillow, what are they like? Did you worry about the safety aspect? She likes to play Peekabo and pulls cushions, blankets, laundry etc over her face until we say Peekaboo (we didnt mean to teach her this, she copied it from us playing with her) and I'm worried about her suffocating.

Am I being PFB about this?

I gave DS a pillow when he was about 14 months, he still throws it out of his cot every night!

Our GP was telling me that we don't need to worry about them suffocating themselves when they are over one, they have the same instinct we we have to make sure they can breathe. I got a baby pillow from Ikea, it's really thin, hardly worth having.

I'd like to know this too.
I have no idea when they are 'allowed' a pillow but DS2 is 18months and likes one, but I meant to find out if it's safe.

I don't think you are being PFB as I have the same question and DS2 is a neglected wee soul whose mother hasn't bothered to find out what she is supposed to be doing.

Oh dear god...just been looking this up on net as dd has had a pillow for AGES...she's 2.7 but sure she's had a pillow for over a year...and a soft one...apparently its a no-no for under 2 years old if you do use a pillow from 2 years, use an airline one (?) or really thin one

Ah well...she sleeps with quilts over her head now...

babygrosandgros · 22/11/2008 10:09

Really Ally, I thought it was 1

Well just googled it...I thought it was one too...but having said that a lot of the stuff was from US...

Ally90 · 22/11/2008 10:18

Now trying not too think about this...la la la...!! over a year!! but they do say from age of one and they don't specify what type of pillow...

My dd had one from the age of 1- I am sure that was recommended in the UK.
Anyway I bought a cotbed pillow from Dunelm Mill, but to be honest, It was a little narrow and did not touch the sides of the cot, so I just gave her a normal adult one, and she loves it.

One little tip regarding duvets- Dont buy a cotbed duvet, as you will struggle to find a nice decent cover which is cheap- I wanted a lemon plain one and I have never found one.
If i had my time over again, I would buy a single duvet and just tuck the ends under the mattress at the bottom

Did you worry about her suffocating lilymolly

DD1 had a pillow from about 15 months, but she hardly ever ended up with her head on it in the morning because she moved about her cotbed so much during the night.

It wasn't a special baby one either just a little smaller than normal to fit the cotbed bedding. She was in her grobags till about 3, cos she loved them & was so fidgetty they really helped.

DD2 is just one but I haven't really thought about a pillow yet but will probably just give her a thinnish hypo-allergenic one when I do.

lilymolly · 22/11/2008 14:46

No I never worried about suffocating.
She could walk at 1 year old, so I figured she was able to move from under a cushion

in the uk pillows, duvets, quilts, etc are ok from the age of 1. I got a cotbed pillow from tkmaxx for about £7 or you can use a standard adult flat pillow or you can also get more expensive cot pillows from mothercare, babiesrus, etc

nicolamumof3 · 22/11/2008 20:33

My boys all have had pillows from 1yr and my 9yr old is very much alive and kicking lol! ds2 is 3 next month and the cotbed pillow he had was quite flat so he had an adult size one in his junior bed a few months ago and loved/s it ds3 is 16m and has had one since about August no probs. we have mothercare ones, the only thing is altho they say washable they have gone lumpy not good. but safety aspect no worries there!

babygrosandgros · 23/11/2008 15:13

Thanks, I think I'll get her a baby one and see how she goes
