child safety locks for kitchen cupboards - recommendations please

My baby son is now opening and banging all the kitchen cupboard doors. I did buy a number of different locks with my daughter but they were not very effective. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced lock that they have used (i.e. they know it works) so I can fit it to about 10 doors? Thanks.

I cannot rec a reasonably priced one, sorry. Having very determined DC, they seemed to break most of the surface mounted ones, so in the end I oped for a few of the internal magnet locks - nothing to see so nothing to fiddle with/break. These are very pricey, but no longer need them for the kitchen, so have moved one to the bathroom for the meds cabinet.

I accepted that opening doors was part of a learning process, rearranged the cupboards and only locked ones that contained glass, ceramics, porcelain or cleaning stuff - plastics and saucepans being fair game.

We had bar-type handles so used rubber bands or those bungees with hooks to strap the handles together - enough give for dd to bang the door but not enough to get into the cupboard.
We used surface mounted 'universal' ones thus for the washing machine and the bin, but I don't think these would stand up to continued determined assault.
We did eventually resort to taking the handle off one of the cupboards so we could open it with our fingers at the top but dd couldnt; manage it.

Having said that we moved house when she was 14m and haven't had any at all in the new house - she has free access to one cupboard of plastic bowls / jugs / tupperware and understands that the rest aren't for her. The cleaning stuff, china and glass are all in high cupboards anyway.

Have you got a link to magnetic ones?

MarmadukeScarlet · 17/11/2008 09:57

I used these

Or very similar, they may have changed since I bought them years ago.

Thanks, may solve my dvd cupboard problem. Or will it wipe all the dvds?

We used the magnetic locks in our kitchen. They were very good. I would strongly recommend a spare magnetic key as we did manage to close the door with the key inside - it took a few hours and the help of a screwdriver to retrieve it.

don't you have to ruin the cupboard though by screwing into it?

Mothercare ones are to be AVOIDED. Sorry for shouty caps but my not-a-child-prodigy 13 month old can open them. They are a ***r to fit and they have a really sharp bit which could easily cause a nasty injury. I hate the beggars. Sorry can't be more constructive. Hope you get soem good ideas.

MrsBadger · 17/11/2008 10:34

the magnet ones only screw to the inside of the door, so you don't see the holes (or indeed any evidence of the lock) from the outside when the cupboard is shut

Could you rearrange the cupboards? Putting locks on 10 doors seems a lot of work and expense for what is, after all, a very short phase.

The other option is a gate to keep him out of the kitchen when you need to. I did this because my kitchen is tiny and sometimes (like when getting roast potatoes out of the oven) I wanted to be sure the dcs weren't immediately behind me!

sorry to crash, i was thinking of the magnetic ones, for my new kitchen, only really need one though..but can you see anything on the outside of the door? and it that white chunky plastic looking thing the 'key'?..thanks

PinkChick · 17/11/2008 10:46

I would shop around, the GLTC are not best know for their value for money.

Check out the mumsnet discounts thingy if you do, I think GLTC may be on there? But not sure, brain is frazzled.

SoupDragon · 17/11/2008 11:07

I hate them. Put one on the sink cupboard and let him bang.
