Trousers for very skinny boys

Yes, I know we've been here before!

DS2 is very skinny. He's about 116 cm high, which is about average for a 6 yr old (which he almost is). But he has been wearing 4-5 yr old trousers, which are too short if they are round his waist, but OK when they are hanging off his hips (as they always are).

He's worn out all his trousers. I seems silly to buy trousers which are technically too short, but the age 5-6 or 6 ones just fall down, they don't even hang off his hips! If I add a belt they will hang off his hips, but then they are too long.

Do you think I should buy the 'too small' trousers? Or does anyone know a good store to try? We don't have a lot of choice here.

IME M&S, Tescos and Adams have HUGE waist sizes for boys.

Asda, Next and Woolworths are a bit better, but still too big for ds2.

no I havent - I'm not scaley like some I could mention

roisin · 18/03/2005 14:33

We do have snake belts, and they do stop them actually falling down, but they're still hanging off his hips.

Is this a lost cause? Should I just accept his trousers will be hanging off his hips, and buy him age 4-5 ones so they don't drag on the ground?

Have you tried vertbaudet, roisin? I know moo mentioned them before - they have nice pants like this , with adjustable side elastics. I got o'kids cord pants for DS2 when he was 5 and he was very skinny then, they had flat front and elastic back and fitted really well.

Their size chart gives

age 4 height 102 waist 52 (20.8)
age 5 108 53 (21.2)
age 5/6 108-114 53-54 (21.2-21.6)
age 6 114 54 (21.6)

(did the conversions at 2.5cm=1" which I know isn't dead accurate.)

DS1 is v skinny so have had same probelm for years. Snakey belt really helped and now that GAP and H&M do the adjustable waists it has changed my life. Is still have to buy clothes that are at least one age size too small as he isn't that tall for his age either, probably average but certainly not tall. he is 7 and my sister in law recently ordered him some trousers from Boden which are size 7-8 and they are massive, i doubt they will fit him till he's about 10! I'm going to have to buy 5-6 and hope he doesn't notice.

I went in Ethel Austin today Janh. I took a deep breath, thought of you, and went in
Found some trousers for ds2 for £3 ..!!!
Encouraged I went in Peacocks, and even the pound shop too; but didn't buy anything.
Are you proud of me?

At Easter we saw my brother and his lovely wife and she asked ds2 what he wanted for his forthcoming birthday (they are loaded btw and always spend a fortune on presents) ...
Ds2 said he wanted a belt!

John Lewis solved our skinny DS problems, and cost less than M&S

Steppy1 · 02/04/2005 22:29

my DS is tall but skinny....we've found that the GAP outlet at Swindon always has some fab adjustable waist trousers and shorts (bought some shorts today as it goes !!)...good quality and bargain prices !!

spykid · 02/04/2005 22:36

Next have started doing adjustable waists on boys jeans, AND you can order on line!!
From one who also has a skinny ds!

jodee · 02/04/2005 22:47

We have a similar problem with ds who hs just turned 5. He's not really skinny, but he's 114cm with a long body and short legs, so he's comfortable in a size 6 top, but still trips over the trouser bottoms in size 4-5. (Must get a belt for the Tesco jeans I bought him, agree with whoever said their clothes come up big, even size 3-4 falls down!)

jodee · 02/04/2005 22:50

Oh - Spykid, can you tell me which are the jeans in Next Directory with adjustable waists, please?

spykid · 02/04/2005 22:56

think these are them

spykid · 02/04/2005 22:58

just looked on web site and it was the baggy pair. although it does't say elasticated waist, I picked them up in store and I'm pretty sure that was the pair I got.
I'll check the code in the label in the morning to check for you and will post and let you know for sure {smile}

jodee · 02/04/2005 23:00

Thanks Spykid - if you could let me know the code, that would be great.

spykid · 02/04/2005 23:04

ok, just sneaked int ds's room.......

bought 2 pairs, this is not the one i just linked to, they are in th wash! These are slighly lighter but def have adjustable waist, code is, M97476090

spykid · 02/04/2005 23:07

just tried that code on web site and doesnt work. thats the code on the ticket though, so you could quote it over the phone i guess(ds hasn't worn this pair yet!)
also code on label inside jeans says M97476
HTH

jodee · 03/04/2005 18:02

Thanks Spykid, I might go in the store and ask them to find them for me (actually, got to go back anyway, I went to their one day sale on Saturday and got 2 pairs of trousers for a 5 year old, but ds would need stilts to wear them properly, the legs are that long!)
