I want an upright hoover but not a dyson.
Anyone bought one recently and got recommendations or one to avoid?

mum2GKH · 15/11/2008 20:52

Sebo - fantastic!

jasper · 15/11/2008 23:50

nic I have had 3 dysons between home and work and found they all were great to start with but lost suction very quickly.

they get totally slated on internet product review websites.

Sort of hijacking really but I felt like the only person in the world who had that problem with Dyson. I've really come to despise that sticker on it which says "no loss of suction" as I vacuum over a piece of floor about 15 times to pick up one crumb. I'm interested in hearing about Sebo too. And, am I going mad, but didn't I hear that Henrys were fab? Oh, not upright though.

Pigstyle · 16/11/2008 21:30

SEBO are fab-have had mine for 6yrs and not a single problem. It pulss me around the house with it's suction, changes from carpet to hard floors automatically and is completely and utterly fab.Gets used at least once a day and is just wonderful.Would not swap it for all the tea in China (can you tell I love it?)
Admittedly, not the prettiest thing but is just fab!!

SweetApril · 16/11/2008 21:40

Sorry to hijack again but just wondering which model of Sebo you have Pigstyle. Been on their website and there are loads to choose from. Some of them are really quite beautiful, especially the Felix one in orange!

choccyp1g · 16/11/2008 21:41

Here's another one who thinks that Dysons are rubbish. Mine just didn't seem to suck the dirt up. (My sister said "but Choccy, you do have to push it about a bit")

If I could design the perfect hoover, in addition to SUCKING UP THE DIRT, it would also have:
An upright cleaner that stays upright, and doesn't collapse on top of you or the chidren or your furniture, whenever you turn your back or use the hose.
Little brushes at the side so you don't get an inch of dust around the outside of every room. Said little brushes not to fall off the second time you use it.
Flex that rewinds into a little holder.
On board tools that don't get lost. (and can be attached easily)
Hose that stretches all the way up the stairs.
A fluffy brush attachment that hasn't got a chunk of rigid plastic inside.
A swivelly head on the business end of the hose attachment (like you get on cylinder cleaners) so you can do under the bed etc.
All of these things are possible, but
I've never found them all on the same machine. And never found a shop assistant that even knows what i'm talking about.

This is my Sebo from John Lewis. I know it's not the cheapest hoover but it is fantastic, it switches from hard floors to carpet instantly. Picks up fluff by going over it once and came with all the tools. I also have a Henry which I can't fault and use them both. Henry picks up better but is harder to push around and get out of the cupboard in a rush. Hope that helps.

NCbirdy · 16/11/2008 22:44

A kirby, you may have to re-mortgage your house but they are worth it - and can be factory reconditioned (ie bought back to new) as many times as you like for 40 years for free (and they have a carpet cleaner too!)

Pigstyle · 16/11/2008 22:52

SweetApril-currently have two cats and a laptop on my lap....sorry cannot check model no....X something?
TBH I would get ANY model I have been so pleased (and converted friends)...do it-it will make you feel so much better about vacuuming!

SweetApril · 16/11/2008 23:02

Thanks mum2 and pigstyle. Going to wait till Jan sales and see if I can get a bargain. Was about to buy a new Dyson hose but I'll make do with the gaffer tape fix for another month or two.

jasper · 16/11/2008 23:15

Sweetapril yes Henrys are absolutely fab and i have been raving about them for years.

However we moved house recently and have a huge bedrom with a cream nylon carpet - would never have chosen this myself but not in the budget to repace it at the moment.

I have reluctantly concluded that Henry is not quite up to the job. Actually he is but you have to click the brushes down and use a lot of elbow grease to get the carpet clean.

It pains me to say it but I think I really need an upright with spinning brushes for this room . An upright vacuum cleaner is a more economical solution than a new carpet.

If it were not for this vast pale expanse of carpet I would never stray from my love of Henry!

I know someone who works in the repairs dept for john lewis - he says they never have Sebos back - they're fab - but lots of customers have problems with others (inc Dysons). we have a miele which is Ok.

mummyineedyounow · 17/11/2008 07:30

Had our Sebo for the 10 years and never had a single problem with it! Would definitely recommend.

mummyineedyounow · 17/11/2008 07:43

The Which guide has some useful info (best buys and do not buy) but you need to register with them to view it. I've tried putting a link in but afraid it doesn't work. You can sign up for a one month trial for £1 though. Their top 2 buys are Dysons, followed by a Sebo.

cluckyagain · 17/11/2008 07:44

Sebo (Felix pet) every time - fab, reliable, swivels (yes Mr Dyson, you;'re not the only one!)

jasper · 17/11/2008 22:50

Good grief I have never before this heard os Sebo and am now all set to buy one!

Have they been around for ages and why have I not heard of them before?

I bought Henry several years ago on mumsnet recommendation and have loved him since.
