Kayleigh · 14/03/2005 22:26

Have been sent a text message to my mobile offering 500 free texts if I text "Free" or something to a certain number. The number has a website associated to it.

Is this a scam ?

it says on the website that you have to pay £1.50 a week.

sparklymieow · 14/03/2005 22:36

This is the small print

By activating your messaging service with 500 text messages, you confirm and understand that you are subscribing to a membership where you will receive other services for up to £1.50 the first week every month and £1.50 for every consecutive week in that month. Services might include, but not limited to mobile content (i.e. ringtones, wallpapers, video, horoscope, animations, jokes etc.) or receive other promotions or competitions from 07781482378.com or associated companies. In using our messaging service you accept that you will receive further information or offers, we hope they will be of use to you but if not you can cancel at any time by sending STOP to 07781482378 (this message is free of charge excluding standard per message charge from your mobile service provider). You can use your 500 text messages at no cost from your account even if you cancel your subscription of other mobile services from 07781482378.com or associated companies. For more information, please see terms and conditions.

Never ever ever respond to spam (whether text or email) is my motto, it only encourages the bastards to send more .

NomDePlume · 15/03/2005 12:06

Responding to spammy emails can result in viruses

Gwenick · 15/03/2005 12:08

as soon as you respond to spam you're letting the spammers know they've got an active account - thereby getting even MORE spam

helsi · 15/03/2005 12:38

Steer clear.

My dad once accessed a website on a sign in the street which was asking if you wanted to earn £XXX per week etc and offering a website to access for more information. He went on the site and a message came up saying - this how you earn it - set up a site and let idiots like you log on - you've just been charged £XX

Kayleigh · 15/03/2005 23:12

helsi, that's terrible
