The DC are all excited, we live near the Alps, we are gonna have SNOW. What SLEDGE should we buy them for Xmas?

Should this be in Xmas topic?

Anyhoooo

DH thinks that the old fashioned toboggan wooden things are the only good sledges, as he had one as a boy.

My reply that it is a longlong time since he was a boy and that there have certainly been advances in the sledge development in the last 30 years was not well received.

I have been informed that I should research the matter and make the decision but he will hold me responsible for the sledgability of the product I buy.

Help!

I would go for a wooden one personally.

My dc have a wooden one that actually was mine as a child. We brought it back from Scotland a few years ago and sadly they have never had the use of it. I am very of you.

(sorry, I know that wasn't very helpful )

MmeLindt · 11/11/2008 16:27

Thanks, HC.

Hmm, Fimbo, don't say my DH was right after alll, he will never let me forget it

I agree with HC

We bought one of these before we had the children (did get funny looks I can tell you but it is great fun!). We have now had more than 20 years of use - and I can honestly say it goes faster than any other model on the hills we use. I LOVE tobogganing! You need to oil the runners before you put it away at the end of the season.

Buda · 11/11/2008 16:39

I am sure you will anyway - but please please all of you wear helmets when sledging. A lady here in Budapest was sledging with her 8yr old son a few years ago in Austria and they hit a wall of ice. He was thrown clear but she hit it head first. Went into a coma and died about 2 weeks later.

Horrific.

MmeLindt · 11/11/2008 16:44

Buda
I had not even thought about that, but the website that flamingtoaster linked to had helmets. Can they use their bike helmets do you think? How terrible for the little boy.

Flamingtoaster
Yes, I do believe that is the kind that DH is hankering after.

Hmpf, can someone come on and lighten my gadget-loving heart with a snazzy lightweight aluminium jobby that you could use on the moon please?

I have just been looking at wooden sledges online and one site says you can use them as an alternative to a coffee table in the summer months - lol

MmeLindt · 11/11/2008 17:05

lol, Fimbo. My DH would just ask why the sledge was out in the middle of summer.

Buda · 11/11/2008 17:10

I would imagine that any kind of helmet would offer protection.

MmeLindt · 11/11/2008 19:22

Surely someone will suggest the JamesBond of sledges?

We had a Hamax one with steering wheel and a wooden Davos one ! Bike helmets not really good enough - you can buy ski ones for around 80chf or less.

LIZS · 11/11/2008 19:35

like this, the supermarkets like 3M migros and toysrus sell them at reasonable prices

MmeLindt · 11/11/2008 19:36

Ok, will look into ski helmets then. What is the difference?

We are going to take them skiing anyway so will need them.

OP posts:
MmeLindt · 11/11/2008 19:37

Will have a look in Migros then.

Which did you prefer? The modern one or the traditional wooden one?

OP posts:
LIZS · 11/11/2008 19:47

Kids found the Hamax one much easier to pull up a slope and ride down. Ski helmets are more enclosed, like a motor bike one and they need to fit properly. Can't remember exactly where you are but there was a good factory outlet complex near Villeneuve with an Ochsner Sport outlet.

MmeLindt · 11/11/2008 19:55

We are near Geneva. Villeneuve sounds a bit French, is it near here?

LIZS · 11/11/2008 20:49

It is on the east end of lake Geneva towards Aigle.

MmeLindt · 12/11/2008 07:48

Will have a look for that, thanks Lizs

Just found the outlet, it is only 1 1/2 hours from us, and they have a Barbie and Hot Wheels shop. Must have a trip up there before Xmas
