Our latest in a long line of cheapo cheese graters has just bitten the dust, so I'd like to replace it with a decent one.

Anyone out there have a grater they really like? I don't mind spending a few quid this time.

TIA

microplane - you'll never look back!

Slouchy · 09/11/2008 14:12

Ikea - the grating surface sits above a blue plastic tub so all the cheese or whatever is caught by the tub. Cheap and excellent.

Thanks Silver + Slouchy - I do have a microplane but it's a very fine one for grating stuff like nutmeg - do they do 'bigger' ones for bog standard stuff like cheese and carrots?

OMG i get through an alarming amount of graters too, starting to think either i must have superhuman strength when i grate things or i need to stop buying cheap graters.

I too am ready to purchase a decent one, anymore grater suggestions? I would like one that grates fairly large shavings (is that what they are called?) I wish i'd pilfered the one that was in the holiday cottage we stayed in recently and told them i'd broken it, or at least i should have noted it's make. It grated cheese like a dream, the action was so smooth and effortless when you grated, beautifully sized and formed shavings, had a smaller grater as a lid and had a handy base that collected the cheese I've thought about this far too much haven't i...

I second microplane - fabulous and worth every penny. They do a coarse one too.

mistlethrush · 09/11/2008 22:52

I've got some Pampered Chef ones - there are 3 types - microplane (yes, fine) rotary - two different drums - one quite fine, one courser - this does everything from mozarella to parmesan, nuts, carrots, apple etc. I also have their mandoline - this has 4 blades including a normal grater blade - fits over bowls flat or stands up as a table grater. All go in the dishwasher... Let me know if you want to get one - I'm doing a few shows for charity this month that they could go towards!

There was one in the Sunday Times today which was a cup shape, the journalist was raving about it. I can't seem to find it in the Sunday Times online though.

Ikea one, similar designs sold in Tesco and Asda.

Ikea one comes with two tubs which have lids to keep grated cheese in fridge, and a large and small greater. Rubbery base helps it to stop slipping on the work top and it is sturdy and solid. Had one for years and it shows no signs of wear or rust etc. Bought another one to get more of the tubs for storing grated stuff.

Thank you all for your suggestions!

Flipflops - hope you get yours too

We have a great one (sorry!) by Rösle, I am pretty sure that you can buy Rösle in UK. It is fabulous. I have had it for about 6 or 7 years now.

ObamasPinkPussyCat · 10/11/2008 13:26

Thanks Mme Llindt... Is it one of these?

kitchen porn

I see that there is a clip on box for the grater available. Must look for one of those.

ObamasPinkPussyCat · 10/11/2008 13:29
