Playmobil vs. Lego - which to chose?

I have neither so:

Playmobil - is it just small plastic things? Can you build with it?

Or is Lego better because you can build with it?

Hmmmmm?

they are different things IME

playmobil is more like, um, a dolls' house
for imaginative play not construction

lego you build with it then perhaps use it as a dolls' house

depends what gaps you have in your toy repertoire

morningpaper · 06/11/2008 11:52

I think I have a constructive gap

I have a lot of small plastic imaginative toys

they are different - (we have good mixture of both) older dd loves lego more than younger (7 and 3) maybe because easier for her to fit pieces together? both are great, I wouldn't go solely for one or the other. check out boots, lots of both in their 3 for 2 offers.

TheBlonde · 06/11/2008 11:55

lego

bozza · 06/11/2008 11:57

lego is your constructive one really.

BiancaCastafiore · 06/11/2008 11:58

My dd loves playmobil and has done for several years (she's now 7) She likes role playing. She also enjoys lego, but prefers playmobil.

My 5 year old ds isn't very interetsed in playmobil but loves lego, he prefers building/construction games.

littlestrawberry · 06/11/2008 11:59

Lego. Can't beat it.

frumpygrumpy · 06/11/2008 11:59

IMHO.........Lego for 6/7 (or maybe more) and up, Playmobil for 4 and up. They are both fab!

Playmobil is a huge hit with all ages in our house. Can be pricey so maybe test the water with smaller packs (a character and small truck maybe) before buying a bigger pack.

Lego is fab and brilliant for a child who is creative but can easily frustrate children because it can take a while to build something specific. Therefore, age needs to be thought about. Grab a Lego catalogue .......it has bumper packs for basic playing and specific packs for more detail.

morningpaper · 06/11/2008 11:59

Hmm this is helpful

I think I will put both on their christmas list

thanks for advice

I used to love Lego when I was small - I used to make Monster Trucks with my brothers and build ramps so they would crash and see whose monster truck survived the longest

(just about the only game we agreed on due to a 13-year age gap )

Both.

My four and three year old still play with duplo (we have a huge box full) - in fact we all play with the duplo.

My four year old is still a bit young for lego, but hopefully next year she'll enjoy it.

I'm a huge playmobil fan, and all the children we have to play here enjoy playing with it, especially with the camper van.

frumpygrumpy · 06/11/2008 12:00

Both are really strong and only break in the way they are meant to IYKWIM.

Don't buy cheap alternatives. They are mince.

Bucharest · 06/11/2008 12:01

Both fab....dd bit more into Playmobil- agree with other posters in that Lego is buildy while Playmobil is imagine-y.

We have airport and house, with supermarket coming for Christmas! (and camper van if I can get one on ebay!)

ramonaquimby · 06/11/2008 12:03

costco have campervan on at £20 if you're near one

ingles2 · 06/11/2008 12:05

mathematical ds loves lego
arty imaginative ds loves playmobil.
so depends on your dc I think
I love playmobil...all those fantastic little pieces.
Knights and pirates are particularly good.

frumpygrumpy · 06/11/2008 12:06

bricks along with wheels and some windows = time for at least one gin and tonic or one adult snooze IMHO.

morningpaper · 06/11/2008 12:26

that sounds good frumpy
