Steerable parent handle on dd trike. Is it necessary?

Hi I want to buy my dd a trike for christmas and was wondering if I should buy one with a steerable parent handle. I've looked at the Smart trike but there seems to be issues with the tyres. Can anyone advise on any others? I'm looking to spend £50

Thanks

It depends how old she is.

My DD is 2 and has one that we got secondhand and didn't have the parent handle with it. It would really help if it did have it, as she can't yet peddle on her own, so we have to bend down to push her.

She will be only 15 months so we will definately need the parent handle but I was wondering if I should get one where we can steer the bike via the parent handle. I was looking at the mothercare touring trike and the smart trike.

yes DEFINITELY i so wish we had bought one with a parent steerable handle. We bought a cheapy from argos which is perfectly fine in every way but would love a parent steerable handle, even tho they are twice the price!!

I'd say no - not just to be difficult, I was really keen to get a steerable handle trike.

Having got one, the handle is an essential, yes, but the steerable bit (which we don't have) hasn't turned out to be important anyway. I just tilt DS so his front wheel looses contact with the ground. Lo, I am in charge of steering, job done! I have the ELC trike for DS and he loves it.

do you mean the fixed handle that comes out of the back of the trike OR the handle that comes out of the trike that has a movable bit at the top that moves the front wheel?

It's not completely necessary for be able to steer the front wheel from the handle but if you have a bigger child it is quite hard on your back to have to tip the whole trike and child up on the back wheels to change direction.
Children take far longer than you think to learn how to steer. And even longer to want to steer in the direction you want them to go in.

I didn't know you could get these, would have made life lots easier for us with our none- peddling, none-steering pair. We had a stick-handle-thingy but nearly broke the first one trying to steer with it and the second one is on its way out.

I'd say a steerable parent handle is essential. we have a Radio Flyer trike which is excellent. would really recommend them, but not cheap. look here

recently tried a trike with a non steerable parent handle and it was not an enjoyable experience. My DD kept trying to steer herself and we ended up going around in circles or colliding with things.

Thanks for your advice. Radio flyer looks lovely could well be a contender. Has had anyone got the smart trike?

Ive got the smart trike and i think its brilliant, really easy to steer. My ds got it for his 1st birthday and hes now 2.4 and he loves it.

Have to agree with other posters and say the steerable handle on my daughters trike is essential! Tried her on one without and it was a bit of a nightmare. I got her a pink trike from Halfords in February that does the trick, and it was under £50.
