Ergo Baby Carrier

I've decided to get one after trying my friends. But the place she got it doesn't stock them anymore. Where's the best place to buy one? She thinks she only paid £69, but the cheapest I've seen is £75 plus £6.95 postage. Are there any better deals?

new you won't find it cheaper as manufacturers control the sale price. from what i know, ergo also bans sellers from discounting them too.

better off with a connecta, imo. read the reviews on MN

jodiejump · 05/11/2008 15:51

Thanks, but it's deinitely an Ergo I want, having already bought a cheaper version which just wasn't comfortable at all when I put DS (who's 22lbs already) on in the Ergo I couldn't feel his weight at all.

ebay

foxytocin · 05/11/2008 15:58

i understand your concern. cheaper in this case does not mean poorer quality. A lot of cheaper soft structured carriers are as good as or better than Ergo, imo. Out of curiousity, what else have you tried?

Maybe you ought to contact one of the big sling sellers who will let you try before you buy? Bigmamaslings and Slingjax both will be happy to give you advice but neither of them do Ergo (anymore if they ever did them. There is a good reason for that.)

Ergo have some questionable business practices, which is why many of the sites have stopped selling them. So if you definitely want a new Ergo you'll need to cough up the standard £75 plus shipping. You might find a second-hand one on eBay.

jodiejump · 05/11/2008 16:04

I bought a Sleepy Nico carrier on ebay and it just didn't work for me, it seemed really flimsy. What's wrong with Ergo? I've tried it already and love it, was just wondering if anyone could recommend a retailer.

Ah, well I shop at Tescos so I doubt their questionable practices would be bad enough to stop me!

nothing is wrong with the ergo carrier itself. it is a good carrier. if you look at the MN reviews, there is info from other people who have used several other carriers and the ergo and there is a link to a MN conversation that speaks of ergo's business practices.

The sleepy nico may have felt flimsy but i am sure it isn't though I don't speak from personal experience. I do read a lot of babywearing natter on another site and some v. v. experienced mums rate it highly.

Xposts. that's fine. you make your own choices.

sasamax · 05/11/2008 16:09

babybean.com and use discount code SMILE for discount. This will make it £71 I think and free shipping if I remember correctly x

sasamax · 05/11/2008 16:12

sorry - web address is wrong - hang on and I'll find the right one...

sasamax · 05/11/2008 16:13

baby-bean.com

Nothing wrong with your buying an Ergo if you want to; it's just that pricewise the supplier you've found is probably as good as any.

In terms of recommending a supplier in general (rather than on price), I've always found Spirit of Nature good and reliable for stuff I've ordered from them and I know they do Ergos.

sasamax · 05/11/2008 16:20

And I can't take any credit for finding the supplier and code - they were passed to me by omgidbi

jodiejump · 05/11/2008 16:23

foxytocin thanks for pointing me in the direction of the reviews etc, I appreciate that there are other carriers out there and I'm sure the Sleepy Nico is fab for some people and I'm sure the Connecta is lovely too, but for me the Ergo wins! I've gone through 3/4 carriers now and it just works best for me, I borrowed it for a weekend so I've had a good try and it was just brilliant, as DS is at a stage of needing a lot of carrying and hating the pram. I've had a quick glance at the thread about business practices, but I don't see anything that concerns me much to be honest; we're not talking child-labour just being a bit more cut and thrust than is popular.

sasamax and gunpowder thanks for the links, I'll check out both those retailers.

Try the Yahoo UKbabywearingswap group to get one second hand - they usually go for about 50 quid including postage.

I agree that you can get much nicer SSCs like the Connecta for less than an Ergo

Miyazaki · 05/11/2008 16:49

I have an ergo and I really like it for a bigger child.

It is expensive, but I have kept the box and dvd and will ebay it when done.

jodiejump · 05/11/2008 16:54

I've just ordered from www.baby-bean.com with sasamax's code £71.10 including delivery which I think is a good price. Thank you! I phoned and they said I'd have it by the weekend too.
