What's the fuss about bugaboos ?

Hello !
I am in the very long and painful process of buying a pram/pushchair and I see lots of young mums with Bugaboos (I live in Notting Hill !) ...they are definitely not cheap but they are supposed to be among the best...

can someone tell me why ?

thanks for your help !

Flo

Have you got a link for the connectors ? Think the front of the 2 chassis may be too far apart for it to link them low enough down the frames, meaning they'd drift apart and make steering awkward.

kath4kids · 29/03/2005 20:17

i have found a few sites that sell the connectors but cant find anywhere where i can ask the question before i buy. Are the connectors available in shops - or just online

hub2dee · 29/03/2005 21:44

Call Dorel - the nursery group that owns the 'Quinny' brand.

mogwai · 30/03/2005 15:42

We are about to buy a quinny buzz. We don't like the colours available in this country but have seen purple and blue ones in Europe. we are going to order one over the internet. The only reservation we have is that we have no experience of dealing with Quinny products. If it develops a fault, will the company deal with us directly? We are a little concerned because the gas spring technology is quite new to the puchchair world. Anyone any ideas??

LIZS · 30/03/2005 15:59

I would have thought you could deal with Dorel (UK) directly although they might recommend an agent (ie. a stockist) local to you to use in the first instance. You may find small differences in specification between UK and European models, to comply with British Standards as well as EC.

hub2dee · 30/03/2005 16:21

John Lewis sell them, if you're anywhere near one of their stores... They've always been good on customer service.

andif · 30/03/2005 16:55

Charleypops - just a thought about your plan to get the fixed wheel version of Mountain Buggy (I think!). I had a fairly lightweight fixed wheel 3wheeler with ds2 and found it a nightmare with my dodgy back - I was delighted when they started doing swivel wheel versions. Once the baby is a toddler, turning gets really heavy.

Mogwai, I also really like the quinny buzz, but not sure about its off road capability - any ideas?

hub2dee · 30/03/2005 17:15

I presume all buzz fans have tried to fold the thing ?

I found it a bit awkward to remove the seat etc.... same complaint with the mugaboo.

charleypops · 30/03/2005 17:32

Andif - I hadn't thought about that!
Oh my word. What's a girl to do???

I got a lovely email from Nigel quite late last night and he seemed to think I would be better off with the fixed wheel. He said unless you do an hour or more a day shopping the fixed Terrain would be far better.

How dodgy is your back? I have an old lower back injury that sometimes aches a bit....

purplelumpy · 30/03/2005 17:34

personally think that a fixed wheel alterian is a nightmare i had one with dd and it got so heavy to keep lifting to turn round corners.

Could you not get one that has the option of both?

charleypops · 30/03/2005 17:34

h2d - just started on the nappy quest. I'm no further than Nappylady atm and I'm already stuck on Nippa or Aplix...

charleypops · 30/03/2005 17:36

purple - which one was it you had, can you remember?

hub2dee · 30/03/2005 17:55

cp.... you make me laugh. I can hear myself in your words !

May I ask you to forward me Nigel's e-mail ? LOL. I would like to glean any snippets from the guru man himself.

Maybe blokes (such as the mighty Nigel) find the pushing down to turn thing less of an issue, and hence he recommends it more freely, all things being equal ?

Have you managed to get hands on with them yet ? It's the BEST way to answer your million questions.

Ref: nappies - I presume you would want to use them for subsequent kids ? Aplix apparently wears out in the wash faster than nippa nappies. Also they stick to each other in the washer / dryer, and I ain't gonna be delving in the messy bin to separate them, and probably won't have enough self control to fold them back on themselves before I dry pail.

For your sanity, you might like to go no further than the Nappy Lady. She is highly rated. There are some alternative advisors on mumsnet, for example KMS is with Team Lollipop. Post in the Nappy section and advice will flow.

Good luck.

andif · 30/03/2005 20:12

Charleypops, my back is fine now - just occasional visit to osteopath when I do stupid things (like erecting IKEA wardrobe single handed..!) However my kids are now 8 and 5 so don't lift or push them at all. Anticipate will all change with baby on hip and pushchair!! Esp trying to turn corners with dog in tow as well on way back from Richmond Park!! Food for thought...!!

Have good friend test driving nappies for me with her 4 month old - she's happy with old fashioned terries with nappy nippa and cute fleecy wrap - can't wait!!

andif · 30/03/2005 20:13

Just realised, strayed a bit from bugawhatsit - new thread in order?!!

sma · 30/03/2005 21:01

I saw the bugaboo ages ago and bought it because I liked it. It wasn't until later I noticed it was the celebrity flavour of the month. Initially it was because it looked different and I can't stand those pushchairs with all the attachments piled on top of each other and because I wanted a traditional pram and buggy combo that would last until my baby was about 4 years old. I have not been disappointed. It is so easy to manouevre. It's a pleasure to be out with. You can see people coming towards you thinking 'bloody pram' but then you can weave it super quick past them its amazing. It may be expensive but its well worth it and will be used for my next baby. I got it in red although most of them I see are black. The only fault with it is that the little bag that goes underneath is a little impractical and the diaper bag is a little pricey at around £69. Other than that its great and up yours to those who say its 'chav' you're only jealous...

charleypops · 30/03/2005 21:12

Hub - email forwarded!

I was going to go to John Lewis on Friday to have a look - but I'll have to double check tomorrow that they carry the Terrain as I can only see the Urban on their website.

thenappylady is a great site, so after looking at that and through old threads on here, it would seem that totsbots or motherease nippas with motherease wraps seem to be the thing. So that's a start. Phew. But then I started looking at Minky...and now I'm goingto have to look at Team Lollipop... Not sure if I like the look of the nappy nippa though - what happened to safety pins??

andif - I'll ask Nigel about using a fixed wheel if with a dodgy back, but I anticipate he'd point out that the weight distribution is such that a lot of it is over the rear axle and makes lifting the front wheel up really easy.

I'd be happy to join you on a new thread..

mogwai · 30/03/2005 21:47

I think the quinny buzz seems good for off-roading. We will be doing quite a bit of that. I really wanted a pushchair with pump-up wheels, the plastic ones look like they will wear badly off road, and I'm hoping to use it for a second baby

hub2dee · 30/03/2005 21:50

Hi cp. Only John Lewis Oxford Street, I think, has the Mountain Buggy for playing with. (I learned this from the mountainbuggy.co.uk / Retailers listing).

I've resurrected an older Mountain Buggy thread so people searching archives can get useful info.

It is here !

Thanks for the forwarded e-mail, cp. Poor Nigel - we will suck his brain dry !

jojo28 · 31/03/2005 01:08

I feel bad... the thread is supposed to be about bugaboos and the MB owners (myself included) have butted in! So I am going to throw all the bugaboo fans a bone (and lets face it you can't go anywhere in London with out being cornered by at least 3 bugaboos whilst you try to get your hands on a triple shot latte at your local Starbucks!)
So check this out - the frog is yesterdays news and here come the Cameleon (yes no H) and the Geko what do you think?

jojo28 · 31/03/2005 01:16

I can't sleep so I am posting another bugaboo link from my favorite site ( I mean who else takes the cup holder options on buggies as seriously as these guys?) It gives a better rundown on the new models - but how bad are those colours?

hub2dee · 31/03/2005 09:06

jojo28: That is FANTASTIC news.

I've completely changed my mind.

Foregt Mountain Buggy. They're so provincial

I wanna get me a new Cameleon [sic] in PINK !!!!

I hope they take my GOLD CARD.

RUN, don't walk to the store.

I think they changed the name because of the mugaboo jokes. Nothing much rhymes with chameleon (WWB - any offers ? 'million' is not close enough)

bozzy · 31/03/2005 16:32

Just a bit of trivia about the bugaboo - it was originally designed for the Dutch Royal Family - I remember approaching someone about a year ago as she had one and I had never seen one before - she put me in touch with her friend who was about to start distributing them in the UK - can't believe how popular they have become..! I own a Mamas and Papas travel system, a mountain buggy equivalent made in NZ, and a small maclaren for bus journeys!!

loubyuk · 04/04/2005 10:00

update,,,,long conversations with many pram sellers (lady at peter jones at sloane square was REALLY helpful for all other londoners) and all but bugaboo and mamas and papas pramette have been rules out. loola does not actually go totally totally flat so it is not really that ideal for a newborn if (like me) thats important to you. accosted several mums carrying prams and all rave about their pramette....also seveeral friends of friends have picked it independently and all love it. would still consider bugaboo but lady in peter jones said if you only really plan on using it for park style walking,,,the fact that to get all the extra bits you need will set you back nearer to £1000 ..its not really worth it. also doesnt fold up that small for proppping up in a corner of a restaurant or friends house.....not easy is it???

Poochuk · 19/07/2005 14:07

loubyuk, can I ask which pram did you go for in the end ? Having to wrestle with similar decision.
