A box and some wrapping paper went down very, very well when ds was this age. I should have saved the money I spent on presents and gave him an empty box instead.

My dd LOVED the fisher price ball tower. Flashing lights, moving balls and music, she played with it endlessly.

Knakard · 29/10/2008 21:56

Cardboard books, push along walker things and the fave in this house is an old remote control!!!

BloodshotEyeballsintheScarySky · 29/10/2008 21:59

An old envelope and the cardboard backing of a new pack of dummies.

Oh and my glasses, laptop, mug of tea, phone, toast...

Sorry, not much use. My DD (9mo) loves this and these. She also has a very basic stacker with coloured rings that I bought for about sixpence in Asda.

At that age both of mine adored a treasure box, and played with it endlessly. I got a biscuit tin, and filled it with all sorts of things I had lying around the house - a big pebble, wooden curtain ring, plastic spatula, length of chain etc etc. Endlessly replenishable and free!!!

But also stacking cups. Though mine were a bit older than 8 months before they got in to them, I think.

We never had one of these but my neighbour did and ds was obsessed by it at 8 months. He absolutely loved it with a passion. By the time birthday and Christmas rolled round he'd got over it, otherwise it would have been a no brainer!

Tomy Squeaky Eggs...and stacking cups - one set for downstairs and one for the bath.

HensMum · 30/10/2008 11:50

I second the Tomy Eggs. DS was given some secondhand ones when he was about 5 months old and played with them constantly until recently (he's just over 1).
His other favourite is a basic shape sorter that I got free from a catalogue.

It says from 18 months but my DS had this under 1 I just supervised him playing with it. Both my DC loved it.

definitely recommend putting a treasure basket together, ideas and info here

My son was given his thomas sit and ride just before he turned 9 months as an early birthday present from grandparents who live abroad. He's now nearly two and it's still his fave. They sit on it and you push from 8/9 months to 1 year. When they start toddling they can use it as a push toy/walker, and when they are toddlers they can propel themselves. It also has a lift up seat which my son loved to hide things in (cause and effect toy) as soon as he got it. The beeper is a lot of fun too and it can go outdoors (easy to clean) but light enough to carry to the park. I think I saw it on kiddicare recently for about 20 pounds. My son also liked the v tech walker at a friend's house, but has outgrown playing with that one now, whilst thomas is still going strong (and momo was one of his first words!)Stacking cups are also great and also soft building blocks with peekaboo windows. Don't waste your time with ELC, was great when we were kids but a lot of the stuff is tat nowdays and falls apart really easily.

ohdearwhatamess · 30/10/2008 13:32

Currently popular with ds2 (8 months):

stacking cups (M&S ones - 9 cups for £5 are fab imo)

this

this stacking rings thing

building clocks

v-tech baby walker very annoying but popular

Also waggling newspapers, playing with any of ds1's toys, lift the flap books, textured books, etc.

ohdearwhatamess · 30/10/2008 13:34

Obviously would prefer to play with my glasses, necklaces, remote controls, phones etc if he had the choice!

BloodshotEyeballsintheScarySky · 30/10/2008 16:33

LOL, who can sing all the songs from that VTech walker!

'Hello puppy calling you, you want to play with meeeee,
Let's have fun to-geeee-ther while you learn your A B C"

AARRGGHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

naomi83 · 30/10/2008 19:00

that's why we got the thomas, the v tech just did my head in!
