Sw a deal in argos for a 37 inch lcd tv for £349 and thought that was good but then reading into it i dont get the difference. Whats diff between a plasma and lcd - either way they are big and flat yes? Do the cost a bomb to run?

LCD is better imo, less risk of burn in and most LCD's are economical to run - you can usually check the electricity rate online.

Plasma and LCD are different technologies, but to teh ordinary shopper on the street they both do the same job.

I think that "smaller" screen sizes tend to be LCDs...but you have to stop making LCDs at a certain size (to do with the technology) so the bigger oens tend to be plasma...

Compare and contrast

LCD ones last longer too

Hmmm..this website seams to diagree with the Guardian report (which incidentally is over 3yrs old which is very old for this sort of technology).

This websiite is very pro Plasma though...and suggests that the cut off point between the two is 37" - which is right where youare looking at.

I don't think I would worry too much about LCD v plasma differences. Look at independant reviews for the model/manufacturer you are looking at and judge hte model you are planing to by - not just the technology.

Oops - didn't look at the date on it...

We bought an LCD tv in Currys recently and when we asked about the difference between the 2,we were told that with a plasma tv the colour of the picture is more true to life and not as bright as it is with an LCD.The saleswoman said that for instance,if you watch alot of football, the plasma tv will show the pitch to be similar to how it would look if you were at the football ground-not perfectly green, iyswim.
Anyway, they had a large plasma on the wall, next to a large LCD to show the difference and there was quite a big difference. We don't watch any football or similar things and preferred the picture on the LCD,so went for that.
Of course, there could well be other differences but that was what we were told.

i really prefer the way lcd looks
plasma can make things look a bit cold and hyperreal
iirc lcd more env friendly or less unfriendly

We had a sony bravia lcd 50 inch for just under 3 years and on the whole it was a great tv but when it started to go wrong it went wrong spectaculary. first the lamp blew and it cost £271 from sony for a replacement then 5 days later it switched itself off, after ringing sony they said it was a power fault in the tv and would cost over £250 before the problem was properly diagnosed then x amount for the repair, we didn't bother and now have a 50inch lg plasma on the wall which takes up alot less space and is much better picture quality.
