they're ok, but they're really, really, really heavy. esp when full of food

benbon · 23/10/2008 21:04

my husband is desperate for a set but i think they seem over priced. but perhaps it will encourage him to cook more often

i have a tarte tatin pan [ponce]

it's fab

eekamoose · 23/10/2008 21:09

I have one large and one medium sized casserole dish. Wedding presents, 14 years ago.

They are still immaculate, and we use them all the time. On hob or in oven. Wish I could afford more of them but am not about to get married again, so one day when we win the lottery....

However, would not buy the le crueset saucepans with wooden handles (see malory's post). For saucepans its got to be prestige with copper bottoms.

Dottoressa · 23/10/2008 21:10

We have a mammoth frying pan which I can only lift with two hands (and then with difficulty). Ikea do some good copies - we have a casserole which we're very happy with.

procrastinatingparent · 23/10/2008 21:12

Saucepans not worth it, casseroles fantastic but too expensive for me so I buy pretend Le Creuset in French hypermarkets.

pagwatch · 23/10/2008 21:12

we had a big saucepan. We had to throw it away about two weeks ago.
Dh was muttering about it being useless when i reminded him it was a house warming present when we moved in together 21 years ago

They are pretty un-ruinable. Unless you really try

traceybath · 23/10/2008 21:14

i have the saucepans but mine don't have wooden handles but they're very new.

I love the casserole but not so impressed with the saucepans to be honest.

AnnabelCaramel · 23/10/2008 21:14

Why are there twoset le crueset threads on the go??!

DecayingDisaster · 23/10/2008 21:16

I Dh has lots. sauce pans, frying pan, casseroles, in the oven type baking dish things, bendy scraper things and a brush thing (use unknown). have had them for at least 10 years, some longer.

RhinestoneCowghoul · 23/10/2008 21:16

We have a griddle pan because I once worked next door to a kitchen shop and it was half price. Is v heavy but will last for ever.

My mum has had her dustbin-sized casserole dish for about 20 yrs and loves it. Great for going from hob to oven.

FruitynNutty · 23/10/2008 21:19

I bought a lovely Le Cruset pale pink lasagne dish from TK Maxx. It's just cracked in half in the oven !!!!!

benbon · 23/10/2008 21:19

ok i have bitten the bullet and brought a 7 piece set on ebay... he better be bloody happy. there is onle one saucepan so i will still use my old set so should have the best of both worlds.

Fruity - that won't have been cast iron. The bakeware stuff is useless at high temperatures.

FruitynNutty · 23/10/2008 21:24

Oh really? I would have thought you could put all Le Cruset dishes in the oven That's terrible Not sure what I would've used it for if not to put in the oven

glamourbadger · 23/10/2008 21:27

We got a load for our wedding - would say the following:

The casserole dishes are fantastic - they heat really evenly, I think they're worth the extra cost. Really heavy though, you need two hands to lift and pour from them.

Griddle pan is nice and heats evenly but TBH I only use it a few times a year. Worth buying if you fry lots of meat.

The saucepans are nice but once you have burned milk or something on the bottom they are difficult to clean without scratching.

Don't go near the hob kettle - the worst kitchen item I have ever owned! It metal heats up and is too hot to hold then it is impossible to pour the water our without burning yourself.

traceybath · 23/10/2008 21:28

They do go in the oven but just not at very high temperatures in my experience.

I had a lovely cream lasagne dish which cracked. Think its probably true of most pottery type dishes though.

glamourbadger · 23/10/2008 21:28

I have turned into my mother. Back to the knitting...

benbon · 23/10/2008 21:28

i have pans, pots, griddle pan, seving dishes and a few other bits and love them! well worth the money.

xx

Hathor · 23/10/2008 21:32

Had a saucepan but gave it to charity shop as was so heavy to lift.

puppydavies · 23/10/2008 21:33

we have the stovetop kettle (present) i was sceptical cos it doesn't have a whistle but actually i think it's pretty good - don't have a hot handle problem and it seems to heat much quicker than our old one did.

bundle · 23/10/2008 21:35

frying pan
