Bedtime Story CDs for a 3 year old

Can anyone recommend any good story CDs to put on for a three year old girl at bedtime? I would like to put her to bed with some nice, gentle stories playing - any recommendations gratefully received.

Alan Bennett reading Winnie the Pooh. It has to be Alan Bennett though - he has a lovely soothing bedtime voice. Stephen Fry reading Paddington is also fantastic.

My dd loves Percy the Park Keeper on cd at bedtime

She alternates it with her Abba cd

DeJaVous · 13/10/2008 20:44

Erm, why not read to her yourself?

nell12 · 13/10/2008 20:44

Percy is read by Richard Briers... another lovely soothing voice!

I imagine OP does read to her herself! - my DS rarely goes straight to sleep as soon as we leave him however, and sometimes likes to drift off to a story CD.

Mine too slayerette... dd loves storytime with us but also likes the company and soothing sounds of a story cd. She also likes to feel "grown up" by "reading along"

Can I also put a vote in for The Tiger who Came To Tea... a classic!

If you look in the children's section of good bookshops you will find a shelf or two dedicated to storybooks that have cds as well... always worth a rummage

Thanks for the suggestions.

I do read her at least 3 books before bedtime, as well as others during the day, but she is getting increasingly reluctant to go to bed (an understatement!) so I'd like to be able to leave her to fall asleep to some soothing stories.

My DC always have a story tape/cd on after stories at bedtime. It's a nice calming way to go to sleep. I will dig around at see if I can come up with any they have grown out of. Are tapes any good? Also the library have loads, we get a couple of new ones every week.

my dd loves The Real Fairy Storybook which is nicely read by Emma Chambers. There's also this free download from Classic fm Ford Galaxy of Stories which is irritating in that each story has a quick ad at the beginning, but compensated for by the fact that they have clips of classical music thoughout the story. target age range may be a bit older but actually my dd would drift off anyway so as long as the content isn't inappropriate i don't think it matters....

Library is a very good idea, I hadn't thought of that. Thanks, but unfortuantely we don't have a tape player anymore - we have a portable cd player that I was hoping to use for her.

My Naughty Little Sister is my 4 yr old's favourite and has been for at least a year - she has just asked me to put it on because she is not feeling very well and it is wonderfully comforting - old fashioned but funny and memorable(I loved them as a child and the one in which she and her best friend Bad Harry(!) eat a whole trifle still makes me feel sick). Other blasts from the past which she loves are Teddy Robinson, Paddington and the Magic Faraway Tree (also loved by my 3 yr old DS).

FiendishFairyFay · 13/10/2008 21:13

So many great suggestions. I'm all nostalgic at the memory of the Faraway Tree

Look in Wilkinsons and WH Smith for CDs in a dvd sized box - Disney ones like Jungle Book and Finding Nemo etc £4.99.

LittleMyDancingWithTheDevil · 13/10/2008 21:17

DS has Winnie the Pooh with Stephen Fry and Judi Dench. Also Finn Family Moomintroll read by Hugh Laurie, and Bob the Builder.

Songs are good as well.

IME they need to be quite long stories, otherwise you get them yelling down the stairs when the CD finishes!
