Can combination microwaves really take the place of a conventional oven?

My oven is on it's last legs but, although we plan to change our kitchen (also on it's last legs!), we are not ready to do so yet. So... I need something to tide us over.

My questions are -

can combination microwaves really do everything that a conventional oven does - roast joints/chicken, bake cakes, casseroles, oven chips, roasted veg, etc....

if yes, what microwave would you recommend? Or any I should avoid?

TIA (also from our neighbours who must be sick of hearing our smoke alarm each time the oven door is openned)

My friend has an aga and they turn it off in the summer. They then use their microwave for everything they would put in the oven. Im not sure of the brand they have but they say its great.

It would be worth having a look at different ones then googling them for reviews.

Thanks lauraloola that's good to hear.

Have had a quick look but there are so many, it's mind boggling!

Anyone got any ideas on specific features they find usefull?

I think capacity will be important (as family of four), apart from that, not a bobby!

Lots of people on another discussion board have recommended a Remoska. I haven't used one myself, so can't recommend it personally. It's not a microwave, but it might meet your needs?

Thanks ED.

Have seen the Remoska's in Lakeland catalogue. They do look good but not sure if they would meet my need of wanting to zap things to re-heat quickley.

Haven't got room, unfortunately, for my current microwave and remoska. Will do a search and see what they all say though.

what about a mini oven

my grandparents got one from lidl a few weeks ago for £19.99 its a really good fan one(they have 2 other kenwood mini ones as well)

They roast chickens / bake cakes and cook everything else in there as well and they use a lot less energy than the real oven

we have a panasonic one, have had it seven years now. i scoffed at my husband when he bought it but it really came into its own when we moved house and got an oven with a door that won't close properly. now use it lots but esp useful are the baked potato and roast chicken functions-as i have never cooked them in a normal oven and wouldn't know how to!
