SMEG cookers ... would you accept this explanation ...

The fan element in the oven of our SMEG cooker has just blown for the fourth time (there are two elements) - the cooker is 3 yrs old but we've had to put elements in at a cost of about £80 a time in July, November, December of last year and again now. Genuine SMEG parts are being used and the engineer says there's no reason apart from 'these things happen' and can happen this frequently. I've asked them to check out SMEG warranty on spares. At this rate it'd be less expensive to replace cooker if this keeps up than keep putting new parts in. What should/can I do? Any ideas?

ps - oven gets fairly heavy use but surely it's built for it!!

Sounds dodgy to me. I think sometimes, even with a good make, you can get a "rogue" appliance that will always go wrong. We have a very expensive DeLonghi microwave/combination oven/grill and it has cost us a small fortune in repairs - so much so that next time it goes we have decided not to bother repairing it again. Hope someone else has more help for you but wanted you to know you are not alone in feeling peed off!

Why don't you ring smeg and ask them to send their engineer out to service the oven. That way you know that any problems will be reported back, also we've always found smeg to be really useful when you ring them and even though the appliance may be out of warranty it may be a particular fault to a particular model. If this is the case often they will agree to check the appliance for free. Worth a shot.
Oh, and tell them you're disappointed in the model and it's not what you'd come to expect in terms of reliability and build associated with their name. Companies worth their salt are extremely proud of their reputations (smeg is no different IME).
That ought to do it alone!

I would write to them and ring them and hound them non-stop until they sort the problem out.
These things DO happen... but not that often! There is obviously some kind of fault with it to be happening over and over again... How many other people have to replace the fan element in their oven that many times???

If you go into your local library they will be able to find out the names and addresses of the managing directors etc of Smeg... write to them and complain as well.

Mention that you will be going to Watchdog/Trading Standards etc etc...

Thanks for all the advice ... I'll get on the phone to SMEG tomorrow although it is the SMEG engineer who comes out.

I would talk to SMEG again having read this link

It's to the sale of goods act and states things such as 'fit for the purpose, and says goods have to last a 'reasonable length of time' - and you have a strong case that your cooker components have not lasted a reasonable length of time.
